The National "Junkers". ***''Bernard Emile Vivian Burns (16 Apr 1889 - 29 Nov 1972) was a British communist, economist, translator and author as an active member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. Emile Burns was born in Basseterre, St Kitts, the son of James Patrick Burns, the Treasurer and Harbour Master of St. Kitts and Nevis. Burns attended Trinity College, Cambridge to study economics. While there, he met Elinor Enfield, and the two married in Nottinghamshire in 1913. At this time Emile Burns was working for Cunard, but was also serving on a national committee enquiring into poverty, which had been set up by Eleanor Rathbone, and which published Equal Pay and the Family: A Proposal for the National Endowment of Motherhood. The family moved to London sometime after April 1918 but prior to the end of World War I. Emile and Elinor were both members of the Independent Labour Party, Emile joining the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) in 1921, followed by Elinor in 1923. Emile found work as the secretary of the Labour Research Department, except during the UK general strike, when he worked as propaganda secretary of the St Pancras Trades Council. In 1935, he was elected to the CPGB's executive, ultimately serving for more than twenty years. He held many positions within the party, most focusing on cultural or educational activity, including a spell as head of the party's propaganda department. He spent a period as editor of the Communist Review, and was later editor of the World News. In the early 1950s, he did much of the preparation work for the party's new programme, the British Road to Socialism. Burns translated both political and non-political writings from Russian, France and German into English, including Friedrich Engels' Anti-Dühring, and parts of Karl Marx's Theories of Surplus Value. He wrote works of his own including Handbook of Marxism, What is Marxism and Introduction to Marxism, successive basic explanations of Marxism.' [Wiki] ***A first edition published by Victor Gollancz in a Left Book Club edition in near fine condition, which is very unusual considering the book's age and fragility of production. An uncommon title. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Folio (206 x 297 mm). Three parts written by two different hands on the same paper stock (watermark: hound with a collar). A total of 270 pp. including 5 full-page pen-and-ink illustrations, with geometrical footers to each page. Later half vellum over marbled boards (ca. 1900). A pretty composite manuscript of the mid-16th century, in the main following closely or styled after the gunsmith manual repeatedly printed by Christian Egenolff between 1529 and 1597. The preface (14 pp., dated "1554" at the end) consists of "Eine lehr so Keiser Maximilian in seiner Jugent durch erfarne treffliche seine Kriegsräht zugestelt ist", an instructional work for Emperor Maximilian also found in Egenolff's book from its 1534 edition onward. This is followed by the first main section: "Büchssenmeysterei von Geschoß, Büchsen, Pülver Salpether und Fewerwergk &c eigentlich zuzurichten, Büchssenmeystern und Schützen zuwissen nötigk" (70 pp.), likewise directly taken over from Egenolff's compilation. The second part is a legal treatise (as in Egenolff's book, though with different content) discussing martial law, entitled "Gerichts Hendell unnd Cautele in malefich Hendelnn Schüldtrechten unnd gastrechten" (72 pp.). The third part is an extensive treatise on a soldier's duties and the oaths to be sworn by the various ranks ("Artickel darauff die Hauptleut [.] unnd gemeine knecht der Ro. Kay. Maj. unserm aller gnedigisten Herrnn gelobenn und schwerenn sollen S. K. M. zu dienen", 114 pp.), going substantially beyond its counterpart in Egenolff's handbook. This is written in a different hand and contains copious explanations as well as five full-page illustrations showing military equipment and devices in red and black ink (fiery arrows, "Wie man eine glüende Kugell inn Holtzwerck schiessen soll", etc.). At the end the manuscript contains an index, military multiplication tables, and legal addenda by various hands, dated 1562, with elaborate geometrical borders. - Bookplate of the English explorer, horseman, and big game hunter Col. J. Hamilton Leigh (1867-1944) of Stockport. Later in the collection of the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research. - Cf. Jähns 653 (Egenolff's manual, 1597 ed.).

Condition: Good. No date but appears to be 18th century. Book is 5-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches, 331p., rich black leather with floral and twisted bands of gilt on both front and rear boards. 4 raised spine bands and full gilt floral decoration on spine. Original delicate color floral end paper. All edges gilt. Text very neatly written in black ink with headings in red ink. Owner name (and likely writer of mss text in the book) is written on front blank but is a bit too decorative to read but something like Johannes Truntzel. His town is also given but also hard to decifer. Lovely item. Good plus, some light cover wear, end papers unevenly browned. Text largely clean and binding is very secure. Nice sample of bookbinder's art and of religious devotion as book feels to have been often used for praying.

A German manuscript book of secrets containing medicinal recipes and incantations to protect one from a wide variety of ailments and to execute various magic tricks. The numbered pages contain about 103 entries, nearly all with a heading in brown ink and the text in black ink (a few near the end entirely in black). The 2-leaf quire F that follows, in a different hand, contains an "aria" (F1-1v) with 9 numbered 4-line verses, sung to the tune of "Fleich hin"(?). Verse 4 records a Moorish merchant selling tobacco: "Ey seht den schwarzen Mohr,| er bringt ein Kraut hervor|das heißt Toback in seiner Kraft|erhält den Leibes edlen Saft|ey seht." A Latin verse on p. 25: "Valneribus quiuis [recté Vulneribus quinis], me Christe subtrahe nimis,|Vulnera quinque Dei, sunt medicina DEI" is clearly a variant of one published in Jean Baptiste Thiers, Traité des superstitions selon l'ecriture sainte, les decrets des conciles, ., Paris, Antoine Dezallier, 1679, vol. 1, p. 354 (from chapter VI on phylactères ou préservatifs): "Vulneribus quinis me substrahe Christe ruinis:|Vulnera quinque Dei sunt medicina mei". Besides the usual remedies for toothache, love charms or potions, etc., it includes "Unsichtbar zu machen" (pp. 22-23).Lacking quire A (8 ll. with the last 7 numbered 1-14?) and bifolium B1.8 (pp. 15-16, 29-30). With the first 2 leaves cut 6 mm narrower than the others (occasionally shaving a small bit of the last letter in a line) and some minor browning, but still in good condition. The wrapper is split at the head of the spine and shows a few small chips. A German book of secrets, especially interesting for the aria with a Moorish tobacco merchant. Brown vellum(?) wrapper, sewn without supports at 3 stations. Manuscript in German with occasional Latin phrases, written on laid paper in brown and black ink in at least two German gothic cursive hands (the Latin phrases in Latin hands), a "tetragrammaton" diagram (rectangular with a St Andrew's cross rather than star-shaped) with the name of (the archangel) Uriel and a "sator rotas" square. Lacking quire A and bifolium B1.8 (10 ll.?). Pages: [4], 17-28, 31-78, [8] pp.

Beautifully calligraphed late-18th-century compilation of prayers based on the popular "Andachts- and Gebetbuchen" published in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. The present manuscript was written by Johann Karl Erbes, who clearly took much care in producing this work. It contains every kind of prayer needed for practicing faith in everyday life. With numerous 19th-century manuscript annotations in German on the first and last few blank pages (dated 1821-1862) reminiscent of notes written in family bibles, including 1 crossed out at the head of the page facing p. 206. Included between the last few blank pages is a manuscript prayer in German, written in minute cursive script on a folding piece of paper. The edges of the boards are very slightly rubbed, the spine shows clear signs of wear and the foot of the spine is slightly damaged with minor loss of material. A few minor wormholes in the front pastedown and first few leaves, barely affecting the 19th-century annotations, internally somewhat foxed and the pages have browned due to some ink corrosion (not affecting the general legibility of the text, but affecting the inner margins of pp. 197-202). Otherwise the work is in good condition. The slipcase is worn, with loss of material on most sides and with the head of the case completely gone. The work itself is a magnificent example of a late-18th-century manuscript prayer book in German, in a beautiful contemporary gold-tooled binding. Contemporary gold-tooled black morocco, with a gold-tooled floral frame incorporating floral corner pieces on both boards, the front board with the gol-tooled initials "A: F:" and dated in gold "M DCC XCI" (1791), sewn on 5 supports with corresponding raised bands on the gold-tooled spine, gilt edges, blue paste paper endpapers. The work is kept in a mottled leather and floral paste paper slipcase. Written in a clear Roman script by Johann Karl Erbes, title in a structured floral frame, all text is written in 15 to 18 lines per page, all within a manuscript floral frame. Pages: [1 blank], [2], [1 blank], 206, [2], [6] pp.

Beautifully written compilation of prayers, based on the popular "Andachts- and Gebetbuchen" published - often by the Jesuits - in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. Examples of these printed prayer books are: Peter Maria Mayr's Geistlicher Seelenwecker, or the anonymous Geistlicher Seelenwecker worin der Kirchen-Kalender, Morgen-, Abend-, Mess-, Beicht- und Kommunion-Gebete, Vesperpsalmen und mehrere Litaneien, dann mannigfaltige Gebete und Gesänge erhalten sind. The present prayer book includes every kind of prayer needed for practicing faith in everyday life. The title on p. 1 (p. 2 blank) continues on p. 3: "Wie auch vom Leiden Christi zu unser lieben Frauen auch unterschiedliche Heiligen Gottes in allen anligen zugebrauchen. Nebst beygesetzten Gebett zur Heil. Thecla. Cum Licentia Superiorum" and mentions the inclusion of prayers for Saint Thecla of Kitzingen (or Thekla von Kitzingen, d. 790). She was an English-born Benedictine nun, who came to Franconia in the 8th century CE (then the Frankish Empire) to support Saint Boniface in his missions. Thecla was educated at Wimborne Abbey and subsequently joined the Benedictine community of nuns there. Abbess Tetta of Wimborne Abbey received a request for helpers with missionary work from Boniface and Thecla was among the nuns sent to Germany. Upon her arrival in Germany, she joined the convent in Bishofsheim (now Tauberbischofsheim in the north-east of Baden-Württemberg) founded by Boniface himself. Later, she rose to the position of abbess and supervised the abbeys of Ochsenfurt and Kitzingen, both in present-day Bavaria, Germany. Given this history, Saint Thecla of Kitzingen has been venerated in Würzburg and surroundings at least since the Middle Ages when her relics were enshrined at Kitzingen. The fact that the present prayer book mentions her in the (sub-) title and that the book includes the "Ablass Gebett von der Mutter Gottes zu Dadelbach" (pp. 280-85, referring to Dadelbach, or now Dettelbach, a place of pilgrimage near Würzburg) make it probable that the present prayer book was compiled in (or at least for use in) the diocese of Würzburg. With an extensive (contemporary?) owner's inscription on p. [3] reading: "Hic liber est meus/ Testis est Deus/ Quid illo querit/ Hoc nomen erit/ Augustine natus/ Et Schmidt vocatus". The title page (p. 1), p. 3, p. 307, and the final page of the register show owner's inscriptions (erroneously giving the date of the manuscript as 1600) written in 1951, respectively reading: "Anno Domini 1600. R." and "Anno Domini 1600. Ludwig Robota Miechowice-Bytom. 20.12.1951." and "Anno Domini 1600. R." and "Anno Domini 1600. L. R. 20.12.1951. R."; all written in vibrant turquoise ink. The binding shows some signs of wear, the head and foot of the spine are slightly damaged (with some minor loss of material at the foot of the spine), some minor soiling and thumbing in the margins, mainly affecting the first few leaves. Otherwise in good condition. Contemporary gold-tooled dark brown leather (a stipple-line/double fillet frame around a floral border incorporating floral corner pieces with a small oval "IHS" monogram centrepiece on the front board and a similar centrepiece with a "Maria" monogram), sewn on 5 supports with corresponding raised bands on the gold-tooled spine, marbled pastedowns, gilt edges. Written in a clear German cursive in brown ink with chapter titles and captions in Fraktur script in gold, blue, black, and red with red pen flourishes; the text is written within a manuscript double-lined frame in brown ink. With two mezzotint engravings of Christ carrying the cross and Christ's Vera effigies with a crown of thorns, mounted on p. [6] and p. 7; both engravings show Christ's wounds and blood painted red. The engravings are by Johann Martin Will (1727-1806), engraver and art dealer in Augsburg. Pages: [1], [3], 307, [9], [4 blank except for the text frames] pp.

Remarkable manuscript on the history of Sweden in the 17th century, including the conclusion of the Russo-Swedish War (1656-1658). The work consists of two parts. The first is written in German and contains general descriptions of Sweden, excerpts on its governing structure, military system, the strength of the army, resolutions of the Swedish Rikstagen, and proclamations of King Charles XI (1660-1697) from the period 1672-1685. The second part, which starts on the recto of folio 109, is written in French, and contains a description and account of a Swedish embassy on their way to Russia in 1684, with descriptions of the members, the many gifts that were given to the Tsar and his daughter Princess Sophie, letters from the members of the embassy, and the text of the treaty. The Russo-Swedish War, or the War of Rupture, took place during the Northern War (1655-1660), which began when Sweden invaded Poland and claimed some of Russia's conquests in the region. After a two-year fight, Russia had to give in to Sweden's demands, and signed the Treaty of Cardis in 1661. A few decades later, Sweden sent an embassy to strengthen the relationship with Russia. It was led by Baron Conrad Erik Guldenstern, Baron d'Uhlaberg, Ahras Johannes Berg, Jonas Klingstedt, and Otto von Stakelberg, and is described in detail in the present manuscript. We have not been able to find any evidence that the manuscript was ever published. The boards are somewhat rubbed and scratched, missing a portion of leather at the bottom outer corner of the front board and at the head of the spine, the front hinge is broken, but the structural integrity of the binding is still partly intact, lacking a silk closing tie on the back, the other three are somewhat frayed. The work is somewhat browned and foxed throughout, the leaves have been folded in the past, and are numbered with pencil in a later hand. Otherwise in good condition. Contemporary gold-tooled calf, sewn on 7 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine, the initials "M.F.K" in the centre of the front board, red and black sprinkled edges, green closing ties. The German part is neatly written in a Kurrent script, and the French part in a cursive hand. Pages: 167 ll. With: [MANUSCRIPT - FRENCH]. Journal de L'Ambassade envoyée de la part de S. M.té le Roy de Suède vers le Grand Duc de Moscovie l'an 1684, dressé par un des Gentils-hommes de la Suite.

Good. Light wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Pinholing in all 4 corners. Size 12.5 x 8 Inches. This is c. 1919 manuscript artwork of the German offensive at Verdun by an artist known only as Griesedieck. The front between the French and the Germans appears as a giant chain, with Germans pouring across the front near Verdun. Very few French soldiers occupy their side of the front, suggesting a French inability to hold back the German onslaught. German artillery appears along the top of the piece, highlighting artillery's important role during the Battle of Verdun. The Battle of Verdun The Battle of Verdun took place from February 21 through December 18, 1916, a total of 9 months, 3 weeks, and 6 days. The German 5th Army launched the attack on the morning of February 21 with a 10-hour artillery barrage by 808 guns. The French halted the German advance at Fort Douaumont on February 25, which the Germans had captured only days before. Between February and October, French and German offensives and counteroffensives captured very little territory. Often, these offensives killed thousands or tens of thousands of soldiers and gained only hundreds of meters of territory at most. The French launched the First Offensive Battle of Verdun on October 20 to recapture Fort Douaumont. The French successfully recaptured Fort Douaumont on October 24. Offensive operations ceased on November 5 when the French reached the line they had occupied on February 24, around 1.2 miles from where the offensive had started. On December 15, the French launched the Second Offensive Battle of Verdun. The French successfully reached their objectives: Vacherauville and Louvemont, two villages lost to the Germans in February. By the night of December 16-17, the French had captured all their objectives, consolidated a new battle line, and successfully pushed the Germans back between 1.2 and 1.9 miles from Douaumont. With that, the Battle of Verdun was over. Throughout the 299-day battle, casualties totaled as many as 750,000, including both French and German killed and wounded. However, historians still debate the exact number. Publication History and Census This piece was signed by the artist, known only as Griesedieck and created c. 1916. We have been unable to locate any published versions of the present work. Signed by Author(s).
