Il Maranda (1742-1810) aveva pubblicato nel 1803 il Tableau du Piémont, quadro del Piemonte sotto l'ancien régime, ricco di osservazioni spiritose e maligne sui costumi civili e religiosi, sull'amministrazone regia, sull'agricoltura, sulle scienze e le arti, sullo stato economico del Piemonte settecentesco. Il cap. XIV dell'opera conteneva il Précis sur les Vaudois, denso di notizie interessanti e di prima mano sul comportamento degli abitanti delle Valli Valdesi durante le campagne napoleoniche (in particolare quella dell'anno VIII), fino all'atto di pubblica riconoscenza emanato dalla Commissione Esecutiva del Piemonte il 28 brumaio dell'anno IX. A esso faceva seguito la Notice sur les Barbets, che il Maranda esortava a non confondere con i Valdesi, trattandosi invece di un appellativo designante bande di briganti e fuorilegge che spadroneggiavano nei dintorni di Cuneo. Il presente opuscolo riprende i temi contenuti nel Tableau polemizzando vivacemente con Giuseppe Cavalli d'Olivola in merito al pagamento dell'indennità ai rifugiati piemontesi e all'inserimento delle truppe valdesi nel corpo dei chasseurs (il Maranda rivendicava invece l'integrazione nell'armata francese). Manca a Hugon & Gonnet, che, al n. 2050, citano l'edizione originale francese, pubblicata senza indicazioni di luogo e senza anno (l'opuscolo fu tuttavia scritto due anni e mezzo dopo la battaglia di Marengo).
