Celle-ci se compose de 450 planches délicatement coloriées et gommées, lithographiées par André et Gustave David d'après les dessins des deux auteurs, auxquelles s'ajoutent 3 titres lithographiés en deux tons L'ouvrage, qui est le plus important sur le costume militaire français, a été rédigé par le baron Dunoyer de Noirmont pour les troupes jusqu'au règne de Louis XV ; le reste est dû à Alfred de Marbot" (Colas). La première partie, qui occupe les deux premiers volumes, a été publiée de 1845 à 1855 en cinquante livraisons de six planches. La seconde, formant le troisième volume, est parue en vingt-cinq livraisons entre 1855 et 1862.
