Herman van der Hem était un Hollandais dont on sait peu de choses. Il semble avoir vécu une dizaine d'années à Bordeaux, où il meurt en 1649. Cent trente neuf dessins de sa main sont conservés à la Bibliothèque nationale de Vienne, en Autriche, au Musée national de Copenhague, au Danemark, et à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, à Paris. Ils étaient à l'origine, semble-t-il, destinés à un atlas que projetait de publier l'un de ses frères. Les Editions de l'Entre-deux-Mers, ayant acquis les droits de publication, livrent aux lecteurs ces dessins dans leur intégralité. Ceux-ci, souvent inconnus, sont resitués et étudiés un à un, en détail, par Emmanuelle Demont et Marc Favreau. Herman van der Hem ne dessine pas au hasard. Armé d'une lunette et d'un carnet de dessins - comme on le voit représenté sur l'un d'entre eux - il "photographie" toutes les rives de l'estuaire de la Gironde, les forteresses qui le bordent, les villes derrière leurs remparts (Royan, Talmont, Blaye, Bourg). Puis il descend les deux "mers", Garonne et Dordogne, jusqu'au point que pouvaient atteindre les navires de haute mer. Les châteaux de Cubzac et de Vayres, la bastide de Libourne sont soigneusement dessinés, ainsi que, en Garonne, châteaux et bourgs fortifiés : Lormont, Blanquefort, Cadillac, Rions, Béguey, Podensac, Portets Bordeaux, son port, ses remparts, ses portes, le château Trompette et ses monuments les plus remarquables hérités de l'Antiquité (Piliers de Tutelle encore debout, Palais Gallien), ses monastères hors les murs (Saint-Seurin, la Chartreuse) sont bien sûr l'objet de nombreux dessins. Le Protestant qu'est van der Hem n'omet pas non plus de dessiner le temple de Bègles Mais partout, dans ses dessins, des bateaux indiquent la position des chenaux et les profils de côtes sont relevés avec une grande exactitude Car, comme le souligne Anne-Marie Cocula en préface, si les Provinces Unies protestantes qui se libèrent de la domination espagnole et le très catholique royaume de France sont alors momentanément alliés, il n'est pas exclu que les informations qu'apportent ces dessins puissent servir un jour à la patrie du dessinateur, à cette Hollande qui jette les bases de son empire maritime et engrange toutes les informations géographiques et stratégiques qui pourraient lui être utiles Quoi qu'il en soit, c'est un témoignage inouï qu'apportent ces 139 dessins de la première moitié du XVII° siècle, car le Bordeaux et le Bordelais décrits sont encore ceux du Moyen-Âge et de la Renaissance. Den roten Faden des Buches bildet die Protagonistin Natalya, die ihre Heimat in einem historischen VW-Käfer-Cabrio bereist. Der Oldtimer stammt aus der Sammlung Grundmann in Hessisch-Oldendorf, die unter dem Titel "Luftgekühlte Leidenschaft" ebenfalls auf einer Doppelseite im Buch vorgestellt wird. Das Buch erhebt keinen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit, das wäre bei einem Seitenumfang von 112 Seiten auch gar nicht möglich. Dem Redaktionsteam war es allerdings wichtig, typische und originelle Aspekte aus dem Leben des Landkreises abzubilden und Menschen in den Vordergrund zu stellen, die den Landkreis prägen. Diesbezüglich unterscheidet sich diese Publikation wohltuend von anderen Landkreis-Büchern, bei denen die Inhalte von Firmen und Institutionen bezahlt werden.
