De vroege geschiedenis en de artistieke persoonlijkheid van Jozef De Coene worden gevolgd door hoofdstukken over de Art Nouveau, de Arts and Crafts, de Wiener Werkstätte en het interbellum, waarin De Coene zich ontwikkelde tot een belangrijke producent van Art Deco-meubelen en totaalinterieurs. Ook de deelname aan de Parijse tentoonstelling van 1925 krijgt aandacht, met de beroemde Vlaamse moderne woonkamer. De Kortrijkse Kunstwerkstede Gebroeders De Coene ontstond uit een familiebedrijf dat teruggaat tot circa 1865 en werd in 1925 omgevormd tot de naamloze vennootschap "Kortrijkse Kunstwerkstede Gebroeders De Coene", naast de Franse benaming "Ateliers d'Art de Courtrai, De Coene Frères". Onder leiding van Jozef De Coene ontwikkelde de onderneming zich tot een veelzijdig bedrijf voor meubelen, interieurs en architecturale constructies. De firma werkte samen met kunstenaars, architecten en ontwerpers en combineerde ambachtelijke tradities met industriële productie. In 1925 behaalde De Coene in Parijs een Grand Prix voor de inrichting van een Vlaamse kamer. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog breidde het bedrijf zijn activiteiten verder uit met onder meer gelamineerde houtconstructies, industriële meubelproductie en modern design. De Kunstwerkstede bleef actief tot 1977.…
