Add to basketFirst edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back. Quarto. 10'' x 8''. The Vanwall was one of the Great Green hopes of British motor sport in the 1950s. The brainchild of the industrialist Guy Anthony Vanderwell, the Vanwall Grand Prix car was built to beat the all-conquering red cars from Italy that dominated the Grand Prix scene at that time. Here, Ed McDonough represents the history of Vanwall in new light, form the team's slow beginnings after Vanderwell's break away from BRM to the success of the later fifties and the securing of the very first Constructors' Cup in 1958. Reappraising the contributions of Costin and Chapman, and offering a fresh interpretation of Vanderwell's part in the story, this is a book that will be welcomed by all fans of historic motor sport. Octavo. Original green and red cloth bound blank notebook. Interesting guest book for a Hollywood gift shop during the 1930's and into the 40's. Despite only first twenty pages being used, the owners of The Open Window, as the shop was named, collected a number of interesting autographs and best wishes from contemporary Hollywood stars which include: Molly O'Day, appearing in over 20 films in the 1920's and 30's, including Sob Sister and Patent Leather Kid; Arthur Hoyt Scott, Founder of Scott Paper Company; Anthony Euwer, author and artist -- with a drawing and one of his often quoted lines "As a beauty I'm not a great star. Others are handsomer far, but my face -- I don't mind it because I am behind it. It's the folks out in front that I jar." ; Inscribed to co-owners "with every good wish" by Fredric March, famous actor who appeared on Broadway in 1926, and won an Oscar nomination in 1930 for The Royal Family of Broadway, in which he played a role based upon John Barrymore. March won the Oscar in 1932 for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and again in 1946 for The Best Years of Our Lives.; Nellie Hill, possibly African-American actress; Alice Muriel Williamson, English author from the 1920's, wrote Alice in Movieland, Lightning Conductor Comes Back, etc.; Sabra Catherine Woodford, noted artist; Francis X Bushman, Hollywood actor whose career spanned from the 1910's to 1960's, the first film actor to be called "King of the Movies."; Marie Dressler, Hollywood actress, who received a best actress Oscar for her dramatic performance in Min and Bill (1930). She received another Academy Award nomination for Emma (1932). She enjoyed more success with Dinner at Eight (1933) and Tugboat Annie (1933). ; Joel McCrea, popular Western star; Presumably Allan Jones inscribing with his character name, "Gaylord Ravenal", from the 1936 James Whale directed film, Show Boat ; Arthur Lang, bandleader and music composer for over 120 films, including Grand Canary and Woman on the Run. Lange shared an Oscar nomination with Hugo Friedhofer for the film The Woman in the Window. All in all he was nominated four times for Oscars but did not win any. ; Ruth Miller Chamlee, soprano and wife of opera tenor Mario Chamlee. ; Helen Twelvetrees, popular Hollywood actress, usually cast as the fallen or betrayed woman such as Elsa in 'A Woman of Experience (1931)'. But she also played the girl friend in 'Is My Face Red? (1932)' and the heroine in 'Her Man (1930)'. Most of her films were made at RKO, where she landed after leaving Pathe and Fox. By 1935, the public had grown tired of her roles and directors had grown weary of her temperament. ; Weldon Heyburn stating that "Your presents help (sic) me win that lovely Greta Nissen". Heyburn was a former University of Alabama football star, and was better known for his busy private life than for any of the juvenile leads he played while under contract with Fox in the early '30s. He married Norwegian bombshell Greta Nissen, his leading lady in the courtroom drama The Silent Witness (1932) and they later co-starred in Hired Wife (1934).
