Joseph Louis de La Boissière, un homme des lumières, est l'un des représentants de cette classe cultivée, éprise de philosophie et de réformes, qui caractérise la fin du XVIII siècle. Esprit éclectique, il était réputé pour son ouverture aux autres et pour sa « sagesse ». Nommé juge de paix à Villeneuve, il s'est consacré à des études historiques et scientifiques : ainsi il a publié en 1811 « les commentaires du soldat du Vivarais ».Pierre Marcha de Prat (1587?-16.) Aussi, pour contrôler et diminuer les assertions de Marcha, l'éditeur a-t-il pris le soin de publier, p. 343, la Relation du voyage du duc de Rohan en Vivarais en 1628. Dans ce même but critique, V. Chareton a publié son livre sur la Réforme et les guerres civiles en Vivarais, Paris, 1913, in-8 (v. à partir du chapitre VIII).
