Profusely illustrated with half-tone b&w phot portraits, some engravings and folding group photos. Binding shaken but generally sound; partial split to the front endpaper hinge has been archivally reinforced. Mild shallow damp line top front corner of the front endpages and first 30 or so leaves; a heavier and wider damp line across the top corner of the last 200 or so pages, most prominent in the last 75 or so pages. There are some instances where the glossy paper adhered due to the moisture exposure; prior owner separated these with some instances of loss of the surface of the page at the top corner but generally without any significant loss of text or image. Cloth a little rubbed and worn at corners and spine ends; a few signatures starting slightly at the front edge. Several of the folding photo plates a bit rubbed or furred at front edge. Sound decent copy with flaws. Good only.

Wrappers soiled and worn with a small chip and short splits at the crown and a small chip on the unprinted lower wrap, front cover with a small corner stain slightly affecting the corner margin throughout, sound and near very good. Governor's complimentary copy with a slip tipped-on to the title page. Several mentions are made of the Civil War, including this haunting passage: "The coffining and removal from the dead from the field at Antietam, and their re-internment in their appropriate lots in the Cemetery is progressing." Ward was an abolitionist bfore the Civil War and afterword was involved in veteran care. He served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives representing New Jersey's 6th District.
