Couverture souple. Condition: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Paris , 1995. 1 Volume/1. -- Comme Neuf -- Broché cousu. Couverture illustrée à rabats . Format in-8°( 24 x 16 cm ) ( 884 gr ). -------- 470 pages.

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Near Fine. An exceptional two-letter manuscript archive providing a 45-year bracket of the legendary Roux family (Roux frères) of Marseille. As absolute oligarchs of the 18th-century Mediterranean economy, the Roux dynasty monopolized the "Echelles du Levant" (French trading posts in the Ottoman Empire), holding wealth and geopolitical influence rivaling the highest nobility. Neither letter bears formal postal route stamps, as both were private ship letters carried directly across the Mediterranean from Turkey to France, and both feature remnants of red wax seals. Letter 1 (1745 - The Height of the Levant Trade): Written and signed by a ship's supercargo, Mares, to Pierre Honoré Roux. He discusses loading Ottoman wool exports and crucially mentions "Mr. Surian" (Joachim Surian), a legendary French merchant-diplomat and financier who frequently acted as a liaison between the French Crown and the Ottoman Sultan. Letter 2 (1790 - French Revolution Financial Crisis): Sent by Perrin frères & Cie to the Roux brothers. The top left is marked "Copie" (indicating it was carried by Captain Guerin; multiple copies were sent on different ships to thwart piracy or sinking). Written less than a year after the storming of the Bastille, the agents desperately request hard currency ("Specie") due to the economic collapse. It famously features the 18th-century French idiom c'est la mer à boire (literally "it is the sea to drink," meaning an overwhelmingly difficult task), complaining that researching obscure cloth prices without a physical sample card is impossible. 1745 English Translation: "Mr. Pierre Honoré Roux — at Constantinople the 29th of April 1745. Sir, I have the honor to inform you of my happy arrival here since the 4th. I am loading here for your house some wool. I expect to make about 20,000 Livres of freight. I will set sail between the 5th and the 10th of June; I could not load the effects. seeing that the cloths are still being distributed here, unless I charge the house of Mr. Surian, for which I would not know how to arrange the counter-accounts. the merchants here not allowing me to do wools. thus the funds will remain for the next campaign. I have the honor to be with respect. your very humble and very obedient servant, Mares." 1790 English Translation: "Marseille, Messrs. Roux Brothers - by Capt. Guerin - Copy. Constantinople, 12 May 1790. Gentlemen. we desire that you have sent us the Specie by the first ships that arrive, in order to profit from the advantageous rate of our exchanges. Money is increasingly rare. This result is burdensome if we consider the loss of time. We have nothing new to tell you regarding the Cloths of Marabail quality. C'est la mer à boire [it is the sea to drink / an impossible task] to inform oneself exactly of the price of Cloths from a factory as little known as that one. To put us in a position to make exact researches, send us in the future a sample card. We have the honor to be. Perrin frères & Cie. Signed by Author(s).…
