Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, 1925-2013, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. The longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century, she was the first woman to hold that office. As prime minister, she implemented policies that became known as Thatcherism. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. Size is 130mm x 90mm. Condition is good. Together with a typed letter signed by Mrs Thatcher's secretary Nicola Halton presenting the photograph to Leslie O'Neil, dated 1978, and a group of 7 typed letters signed to Leslie O'Neil from various secretaries of Mrs Thatcher (including Tessa Gaisman, Janice Richards, Caroline Ryder (née Stephens) and others, 1978-86, one on Conservative Party stationery, the rest on 10 Downing Street stationery, most retaining envelopes. - Provenance: the recipient Leslie O'Neil appears to have been a sometime employee of Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia (a few of the letters are addressed to him there, the rest to addresses in Manchester).

Here Thatcher declines an invitation to a dinner party from the Hon. Gerald Lascelles of The Institute of the Motor Industry as she was to attend an exhibition opening in Tel Aviv, Israel, adding by hand "What a pity - it would have been nice to renew the habit of serving the motor industry annually!". Writing just a week after her dramatic resignation, she thanks her correspondent for her 'kind and generous message,' noting, 'It has given me great strength and encouragement during these difficult days. I most earnestly hope that the things I have tried to do for Britain will continue. That matters for me more than anything else.' Letter folds, otherwise in fine condition.
