La fonction "sommeil" de son cerveau a été détruite par un éclat d'obus durant la Guerre de Corée. Il utilise ce temps libre à apprendre des dizaines de langues étrangères. Membre d'associations contestataires farfelues il est surveillé à la fois par le FBI et la CIA ce qui ne l'a pas empêché d'être un espion efficace. Tout se gâte en 1972 lors d'une entrevue avec l'agent suédois Harald Engstrom. Croyant Tanner militant de la Skoal (mouvement indépendantiste de la Suède méridionale) il le drogue au cognac et place son corps dans un congélateur. Retrouvé par hasard vingt-cinq ans plus tard Tanner se réveille à l'hôpital en 1997. Il a 64 ans mais grâce à cette cryogénie forcée son physique n'a pas été modifié. Il retrouve son appartement et sa fille adoptive Minna désormais presque aussi vieille que lui lorsque son ancien service se manifeste. Tanner doit partir en Birmanie pour déstabiliser la dictature militaire qui gouverne le pays. Sa mission ? Assassiner une opposante que les généraux maintiennent cloîtrée dans sa propre maison.
