NASA photo no. 72-H-24. Text on reverse: ?Dark splotches on Mars. Much of the south Temperate zone of Mars is found by Mariner 9 to…contain dark irregular areas not present in Mariner 7 images taken in 1969. Some of the splotches are contained within craters, others appear to wash over craters. The largest splotches are several hundred kilometers across. Under ideal conditions, they should be visible from Earth and may be identical to the ?dark nuclei? noted by ground-based observers. This image, obtained January 7 on Orbit 109, is in Phaethontis. Range from Mariner 9 to the surface was 1252 miles (2068 kilometers). The crater at center, with a dark ring around its floor, is about 77 miles (125 kilometers) in diameter.. Softcover / Paperback.

The cap--about 200 miles in diameter---is centered near 85°S, 30°W and the geographic pole (90°S), which is not covered by frost at this season, is at lower right in this mosaic. Condition: Very Good. Washington D.C., NASA, December 30, 1971. Vintage glossy black and white photograph (ca 203 x 254 mm) with blue carbon copied text, somewhat faded, on reverse. Somewhat warped, slight creasing in corners, text with a couple of underlinings in ink. NASA photo no. 71-H-1929. Text on reverse: ?This striking vi…ew of the surface of Mars was taken by Mariner 9 during the spacecraft?s 67th orbit of the planet and is unlike any other Martian view yet obtained. Three weeks earlier, this area -- Phoenicis Lacus -- was hidden from view by the great dust storm. This plateau lies about 3 1/2 miles above the mean elevation of Mars. Lower areas are still hidden by the dust. The few craters indicate that the surface is relatively young and possibly may be covered by volcanic deposits and later broken by faults that cut the rocks into mosaic-like fragments. The fault valleys are about 1 1/2 miles across. As the dust storm clears, more of the surface will come into view. This picture was taken from an altitude of 4000 miles on December 17. North is at the top. The center of the picture is 17.5° south of the Martian equator.. Softcover / Paperback.

Text on reverse: ?With the complet…ion of Mariner 9?s planned mapping coverage at Mars, pictures are being taken of features of special interest, such as this braided channel sweeping past a crater. Such channels suggest the former presence of fluid erosion of the Martian surface. Study of the land forms in detail will be necessary in order to decide whether water or some other fluid system was the active agent. The crater is 19 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter. NASA photo no. 71-H-1753. Text on reverse: ?The most conspicuous feature yet observed on Mars by Mariner 9 is the darkish spot located near the top…of this picture. It has been tentatively identified with Nix Olympica, a curious ring-shaped feature photographed by Mariner 6 and 7 in 1969 and a point which radar indicates is one of the highest on Mars. One possible explanation suggests a high mountain or plateau which is being seen as it rises up through the bright dust surrounding the rest of the planet. The picture, one of a series of 31 recorded on the first tape load during approach to Mars, was taken at 8:46 a.m. PST, November 11, 1971, at a range of about 408,000 miles. North is at the top..
