Softcover -- Danas u hrvatskoj historiografiji egzistira čitav pregrt knjiga i članaka (popularnih, stručnih i znanstvenih) koji se bave raznim aspektima Domovinskog rata (ratnim operacijama, sjećanjima sudionika, ratnim zločinimaitd), a…li rijetko ita od navedenog daje presjek glavnih događaja iz presudne 1991. godine. Upravo zato je temeljna svrha ove knjige davanje sinteze glavnih događanja kroz prizmu, sa jedne strane Jugoslavenske narodne armije, a sa druge strane hrvatskih obrambenih snaga (temeljne i specijalne policije Ministarstva unutarnjih poslova RH, Zbora narodne garde te potom Hrvatske vojske i postrojbi Narodne zatite). Glavni protivnik (uz asistenciju postrojbi pobunjenih Srba) hrvatskim obrambenim snagama te 1991. godine bila je Jugoslavenska narodna armija (JNA). Upravo iz navedenog razloga prvi dio knjige posvećen je genezi JNA od 1945. do 1991. godine. To se u prvom redu odnosi na objanjenje doktrine i koncepcije predviđene uporabe JNA u slučaju oruanog konflikta, a potom i na promjene ustroja koje su pratile navedene promjene u doktrini i koncepciji uporabe JNA. Posebno poglavlje u prvom dijelu knjige posvećeno je detaljnom opisu razmjetaja (dislokacije) postrojbi JNA (kopnene vojske, ratnog zrakoplovstva i protuzračne obrane te ratne mornarice) na ozemlju Republike Hrvatske te 1991. godine. Ovo je iznimno vano jer se na temelju navedenog razmjetaja postrojbi JNA moe dobiti detaljan uvid sa kojim postrojbama je JNA raspolagala za provedbu svog zamiljenog ratnog cilja. Drugi dio knjige opisuje ratna djelovanja JNA protiv Republike Hrvatske. Da bi shvatili poloaj i ulogu koju će JNA imati 1991. godine dana je geneza procesa transformacije JNA od čuvara i garanta jugoslavenske opstojnosti do glavnog pomagača u pokuaju provedbe plana o stvaranju zamiljene velike Srbije. Upravo sa ciljem provedbe navedenog plana Generaltab (Glavni stoer) JNA je isplanirao napadnu operaciju protiv Republike Hrvatske sa radikalnim ciljem te potom izvrio ojačavanje već postojećih snaga na području Hrvatske dovođenjem novih postrojbi. Međutim, ozbiljno podcjenjivanje snage otpora te jedinstva i upornosti hrvatskih branitelja dovodi do propasti napadne operacije JNA.

NEW -- This book tells the story of the thousands of Bosnian Muslims who served in one of the most unique and notorious Waffen-SS divisions the 13th Waffen Division of the SS Handschar. Realizing the position of Bosnian Muslims in the war-torn Balk…ans was difficult, and being aware of the fact that some Muslims harbored pro-German sentiments, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler and SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS Gottlob Berger (head of the SS Main Office) approached Hitler in late 1942 with an idea to establish a Bosnian Muslim SS division. Werhas and Mikulčić describe the political circumstances in which the division was eventually established, the recruitment efforts, and especially the role Islam played in its foundation and everyday life. Himmler, who had been impressed by Bosnian-Herzegovinian soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I, was fascinated by Islam and believed the enlisted Muslims would become fearless soldiers. The authors also cover in great detail the combat operations in which the division participated: spending most of its existence fighting the Yugoslav Partisans in Bosnia, the SS Division Handschar developed a widespread reputation for brutality in battle. It also committed atrocities against Serbs and Jews. The book with 127 rare photographs from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration covers two more SS divisions with Muslim soldiers in the Balkans the 23rd Waffen Division of the SS Kama and the 21st Waffen Division of the SS Skanderbeg. Both of these were formed in Albania and left a significant impact on that period of Albanian history, even though neither would ever reach full divisional strength. The circumstances of their establishment, however, and especially the importance of religion, are quite different when compared to the SS Division Handschar. With emphasis put on Albanian national sentiments rather on religious affiliation, the story of these two divisions is crucial to understanding an often-overlooked but important part of World War II in the Balkans.
