Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover with dustjacket, scarce baseball novel co-written by the man who broke Babe Ruth's home run record for a season without using performance enhancing drugs and who did so under tremendous pressure from the media and fans, most of whom were rooting for legend Mickey Mantle to accomplish the feat, includes a section of batting tips by Maris at the end of the book, the green cloth binding is mottled to off-white on the top and bottom edge, a small amount of mottling is also present on the spine, pages 95-99 are moderately tanned near the top, the binding is tight and square, clean and presentable inside and out, no other remarkable flaws, the jacket has a damp-mark on the spine but it is faint and does not detract very much from the jacket's appearance, also a small edge-chip at bottom of spine and a small "G" written in ink at the bottom of the front panel, the jacket is pleasing to the eye overall and features a photo of a smiling Maris on the front flap, a photo of Maris standing with a young batter on the rear flap, photos of Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays and Bill (Moose) Skowron on the rear panel, and a nice illustration of Maris completing his swing on the front panel and spine, the original price (2.95) is present and a professional (removable) mylar cover is included, quite the treasure.

This book gives a firsthand "inside story" of the Philadelphia Athletics' move to Kansas City in 1955. They played in Kansas City from 1955 to 1967 before moving to Oakland, CA. Maris began his major league career in 1957 with the Cleveland Indians and was traded to Kansas City in June of 1958. In December of 1959 he was traded to the New York Yankees. So somewhere in the 1957-1958 seasons someone with the Athletics found a stack of these books and began having the players sign/inscribe the 1956 books. Maris' career blossomed after the KC stay to include World Series games and Home Run crowns. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Signed by others involved with.
