'97 - Mark Dion is an American artist who metamorphoses into an ecologist, bio-chemist, detective and archaeologist. In his gallery installations around Europe and America since the 1980s, Dion has constructed the laboratories, experiments and museum cachés of the great historical naturalists-following in their footsteps in his own adventurous, eco-inspired journeys to the tropics. Dion crosses Darwin, Disney and Hitchcock in work ranging from hundreds of photographic 'specimens' documenting all the insect life in a single metre of meadow, to the meticulous gathering and labelling of the rubbish tossed out over hundreds of years from a sixteenth-century Italian castle. His research and magical collections are presented in installational still-lifes which combine taxidermic animals with lab equipment with artefacts, like walk-through wunderkammers, life-sized cabinets of curiosity. Den Interessen und Forschungen des Künstlers entsprechend wurde das 1704 verfasste und (Paul Jacob Marperger zugeschrieben) anonym erschienene Buch über Kunst- und 30kammern neu aufgelegt und steht damit sowohl dem Kunsthistoriker als auch dem Künstlerbüchersammler als unveränderter Reprint zur Verfügung. Das vorliegende Buch enthält neben zahlreichen Kupferstichen und dem Plan des »idealen 30hauses« auch ein umfangreiches Verzeichnis europäischer Kunst- und Wunderkammern mit Beschreibung der jeweiligen Besonderheiten. In dieser von Gerhard Theewen herausgegebenen neuen Edition bekommt der Begriff "Künstlerbuch" eine neue Dimension.

Édition originale de ce livre d'artiste de Mark Dion. Un des 36 exemplaires, tirage unique avec 9 exemplaires d'artistes. Dans ce premier ouvrage, l'artiste Mark Dion a réuni tout un ensemble de notes et dessins à la manière d'un explorateur scientifiques du XIXe siècle. Il évoque un voyage en Guyana pour y recueillir des spécimens d'animaux et de végétaux. Il mêle des pages de journal scientifique décrivant ses expériences et ses observations dans la forêt tropicale, établit des listes et représente le matériel utilisé, des dessins des spécimens recueillis ainsi que des reproductions photographiques du paysage en noir et blanc. À la fin de l'ouvrage dans une pochette collée au second contreplat, se trouvent, en feuilles, deux reproductions photographiques d'animaux dans la forêt de nuit, trois dessins reproduits de matériel, un texte, deux petites cartes reliées de la même peau de buffle que la reliure et la justification signée par l'artiste et datée de 2007.
