Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Sweeping the Skies is the story of No. 452 Squadron, an RAAF fighter unit formed in the UK in April 1941. Equipped with the superb Supermarine Spitfire, the squadron soon deployed to bases south of London and was in the thick of fighting against the Luftwaffe over England, the Channel and northern France.Remarkably, between August and November 1941, No. 452 Squadron held the Fighter Command record as the top-scoring unit in Britain. This was largely due to the exceptional skills and leadership of some outstanding ace pilots, including Irishman Wing Commander Brendan Paddy Finucane and well-known VFL footballer Squadron Leader Keith Bluey Truscott. In 1942 the squadron moved to Australia and became part of No. 1 Fighter Wing defending Darwin. The following year was spent intercepting sizeable formations of Japanese fighters and bombers. These heated combats incurred some cost including the loss of commanding officer Squadron Leader Ray Throttle Thorold-Smith. In the final period of the war the squadron advanced north to Morotai and Borneo in the Netherlands East Indies.No. 452 Squadron was rightly lauded by the Australian media and deserves to be remembered as one of the foremost RAAF wartime units. However, as a 400 series squadron raised in the UK it is often overlooked. The author, Dr Mark Lax, is a retired air force officer who joined the RAAF in 1974 and retired in 2024. In recent years he has reinvented himself as a military historian, educator and author. Sweeping the Skies is the story of No. 452 Squadron, an RAAF fighter unit formed in the UK in April 1941. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In 1996, the Royal Australian Air Force celebrated its 75th anniversary of service to the Australian nation. During most of those 75 years, a global security environment developed which was known and understood and thus, the nation's defense force could be tailored to counter specific threats from within financial guidance. As the world enters the post-Cold War era, the hard questions have become; what is the threat, how should the new generation military be developed and what should be its purpose in peacetime Although Australia continues to be a strong supporter of the Western Alliance, the emerging post-Cold War world promises new challenges to those previously well known conditions. The aim of this paper is to examine how evolving international, domestic and air power trends will affect Australia s force structure and the application of air power post-2010 in Australia s region of interest. As the world and more importantly the region changes, so too must government policy and military strategy evolve. Leading the thrust for change are the global, regional and national trends which act as signposts to the future. Globally, trends include the rise of uncertainty and instability, the growth of economic trading blocs and their concomitant effect on nations, population growth, diminishing defense budgets and the ceaseless technological revolution. Regionally, the indicators are for high economic growth, a nationalistic struggle for autonomy and a rising awareness of trans-national threats. These nations now seek a greater say in regional affairs and have commenced armed forces xi modernization to give backing to their political dialogue and rhetoric. Nationally, Australia's outlook is not so clear. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Size 270mmX190mm. This is a rare gem of a book, one of which offers a new perspective on the Australian Flying Corps squadron on operations in Sinai and the Palestine in the First World War.
