Penny had a post in 'The Masters Lodge', Clare College, Cambridge and, during World War Two, served as a W.A.A.F. driver with Bomber Command. She travelled extensively during her life and went to Aden, Egypt, Sudan, Canada, Malaysia, India and Spain.
