Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Hardcover, x + 129pp, NOT ex-library. Mildly used, a clean and bright copy with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps. Firm secure binding. Published without a dust jacket. --- Most of the less-favoured regions in Europe feature large areas of forestland. The location of these areas - often far from political and economic centres, and in many cases in adverse climatic or terrain conditions - have been problematic for agriculture as well as for many other economic activities. Because of this unfavourable relationship between forest cover and the regional development opportunities of non-forest sectors, forest resources are an important factor for regional employment and income in many less-favoured regions. Higher utilization of existing wood and non-wood forest resources and services is expected to contribute to regional development by increasing the employment opportunities and welfare. The FORWARD (Forest Resources for Work Opportunities and Regional Development) project at the European Forest Institute was initiated to investigate the opportunities for rural areas to generate employment and income based on forest resources. The four-year study concentrated mainly on 11 case areas located in the border regions of Europe. In addition, analyses on the overall situation of the potential of forestry to contribute to regional development in Europe were conducted. The findings of the project are presented in this report. --- Contents: 1. Introduction [From Agricultural to Multi-Sectoral Countryside; Main Concepts; Links to Earlier Studies; FORWARD Project; Purpose and Objectives of the Report]; 2. Theories [From the 1950s to the Key Issues in the 1990s; Multifaceted Nature of the Forest Sector; Production Types; Regional Development Theories and the Forest Sector: - A Broad Framework - Relevance of Theories; Multi-Causal Explanation of Development; Role of Human Agency: Innovation or Adaptation; How Much Does the Proactivity of Locals Matter?; Framework of Research; Limits to Research: Uncertain Future]; 3. Quantitative and Qualitative Methods [Combination of Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches in FORWARD; Quantitative Data and Analysis: - Regional Forest Resource and Socio-Economic Data - Multivariate Statistical Analysis; Qualitative Data and Analysis: - Potential of Qualitative Approaches - A Boolean Approach for Qualitative Comparative Analysis - Deductive Process for the Development of Hypotheses - Data Collection for Qualitative Analysis]; 4. Role of the Forest Sector in Employment and Income [Forestry and Socio-Economic Structures in EU Countries; Regional Variation in Forestry and Socio-Economic Variables in the EU; Results for Comparative Qualitative Analysis]; 5. Conclusions [Theoretical Findings: - Relevance of the Theories - Theoretical Considerations Based on the Quantitative Results - Theoretical Considerations Based on the Qualitative Results; Conclusions on the Success Factors: - Timber Resources - Industries - Services - Know-how; Policy Implications: - Regional Lessons - Public Intervention - Human Resources; Future Research Needs]; References. …

Hardback. Condition: New. During the 1970s and 80s mine closure and wind-down became increasingly common in a number of countries. As mining communities are often situated in remote areas, with most of the community dependent on the mine, these closures have far-reaching implications. Originally published in 1992, this book addresses these issues with regard to the community and the problems facing the policy maker. The book develops some understanding of the factors influencing those affected by closure and examines the relative success of attempts to resolve the problems generated by closure. The book brings together case studies from Scandinavia, Australia and Canada. Each case study deals with one or more communities facing the closure of mines on which they depend. The particular case studies have been chosen both with a view to exploring the comparative contexts and to developing general guidelines for communities and companies facing closure and wind-down in the future.…
