Originally settled by Thracian tribes in the 6th century and was part of the Bulgarian Kingdom until the Ottoman Empire occupied it in the 1520s. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, the Congress of Berlin awarded South Dobruja to Bulgaria and North Dobruja to Rumania. The Treaty of Bucharest of 1913 ceded South Dobruja to Rumania, a provision which remained in effect until 1940, when the Bulgarian-Rumanian Treaty of Craiova returned possession of South Dobruja to Bulgaria. 2.
