Sorti sous-lieutenant en 1803 de l'Ecole spéciale de Fontainebleau, il a dix-neuf ans lors de la campagne d'Austerlitz. Il est en Prusse, en Allemagne, puis en Espagne. "Voltigeur de l'Empire", il participe à la campagne de Russie et sera l'aide de camp du général Rapp à Dantzig en 1813. Il restera en service sous la Restauration et fera la campagne d'Espagne. Admis à la retraite en 1855, il sera maire de Montmorency en 1857. L'auteur évoque la Vendée en 1793, le siège de Toulon, Hudson Lowe, l'Empereur, le duc de Reichstadt, le prince Dietrichstein, Talleyrand, Boïeldieu, la conquête d'Alger, la ville d'Hyères, la vallée de Chamonix, la Suisse, etc. Colonel d'état-major, Jean Jules Marnier (1785-1874) fut premier aide-de-camp du général Mermet (1772-1837, lui-même aide-de-camp du roi Charles X), puis maire de Montmorency de 1857 à 1865.
