Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, gilt illustration to upper cover, xiv, vi, 175 pp. Very Good, with sunning to edges and former-owner bookplate; in a Good dust jacket with edgewear with includes light chipping. From dust jacket: The great story of aviation and the direction in which it is going is the story of our future -- a future which will be written in terms of either winged peace or winged death. It's a story which few men could tell with the authority and conviction of 'Billy' Bishop. Bishop learned aviation the hard way. In the cockpit of a World War I flying crate he became the greatest Allied ace by destroying 72 German aircraft. In the years between the wars, he remained actively interested in aviation -- both military and commercial -- and kept a wary eye on the growing air might of Germany, which he was sure we would have to fight again. When World War II broke, Canada became the heart of Britain's air-training and air-transport system, and 'Billy' Bishop has played a vital role in this great program. Now, at the climax of his career, he has undertaken a new job and rendered what may well be his greatest service to aviation. He has poured into an utterly fascinating book the past, the present and -- most of all -- the future of flight. He has told the story of aviation from Kitty Hawk to the B-29 Superfortresses, much of it in terms of his personal experiences. He shows us how our world has already been changed geographically, socially, economically, politically; how these changes will be either for great good or for desperate evil. He makes us aware of the new world map with its limitless directions and its textbook-shattering implications. He shows us the new routes over which we will either trade or fight, find peace or destruction. Through all of Bishop's stirring account, written with burning urgency, runs a zeal to make us understand the realities of world aviation today. The proved possibilities of stratospheric flight, rocket and jet-propulsion, have already rendered every plane now in the air obsolete. New York to London in three hours is assured. Tomorrow's air age is here! Aviation, Aeronautics, Aircraft, Aeroplanes, Air Planes. yslic.

Paperback. Condition: Collectible: Very Good. Signed by the author - Pre-trade edition of this title Circa 1979 (previous owner's date on front end paper). Appears to be a hand typed copy of the manuscript with b7w pictures inserted. Numerous typos throughout in the text and many hand written corrections. Most likely a copy used by publisher Scurlock for their 1982 edition. Marshal Ralph L. Hooker (b. June 13, 1906 - d. July 18, 2001) was a man of many talents. He was a cowboy and a minister. In early years, he intrigued audiences with his fast-draw, sharp-shooting, and rope-tricks. He was always a horse man and loved the great outdoors. He worked with leather in Carthage, and was a saddle maker, once employed by Porter Bros. in Arizona in the early 1940's. One of his more recent saddles is owned by a doctor in France. He also repaired and fashioned firearms throughout his adult life. Marshal served many years as an officer of the law in several capacities in various towns in Missouri and Casa Grande, Arizona. His book, Born Out of Season is the true story of a modern-day frontiersman. From his early years in Oklahoma, to his walks of the Santa Fe Trail and Boone's Wilderness Road, Marshal Hooker tells his story in an honest, down-home way.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Gross, Eli (illustrator). In Hebrew. 390 pages. 21 x 14.5 cm. Personal account of the war in Burma by the Commander of the 'forgotten' Fourteenth Army, and now generally recognized as one of the great military memoirs of all time. He was the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces. He was awarded the Military Cross. Field-Marshal Sir William Slim (1891-1970) led the 14th army (the Forgotten Army) in Burma during the Second World War. Known for his self-deprecating style he has been hailed as perhaps the greatest commander of the twentieth century. He became Chief of the Imperial General Staff after the war and then Governor-General of Australia. Appointed commander of the Burma Corps after the fall of Rangoon, Lord Slim dealt with lack of men, arms, air power, and intelligence information. This, the first full account of the Burma war, tells the story of the men who won victory under Sir William Slim. He describes in detail the attempts to contain the Japanese in spite of the ghastly condition of the men he led when the fall of Rangoon had completely cut off that ill-equipped army from the outside world. His account of their last bloody battle in the "Basin" at Shwegyin, as they fought their way out of Burma, is a magnificent report of one of the most desperate actions of the war. Later, as Commander of the Fourteenth Army, the author goes on to describe the Battle of Imphal-Kohima, the advance across the Chindwin, the Battle of the Irrawaddy with the simultaneous attack on Meiktila and the subsequent race for Rangoon before the monsoon bogged down troops and transport. This book ranks as one of the great records of a major campaign.
