The shadow alluded to in this novel's title is cast by a secret debt owed by a squire whose ancestor's name appears on the roll of Norman invaders who fought in the Battle of Hastings, in 1066, to a country doctor, the great grandson of a Jacobite earl beheaded in 1745.
