First edition. Quarto. Volume 79, Two parts in one. Part One vi [ii] 138, one plate. Part Two [iii]-vi, 139-333, plates II-IV. Three folding tables numbered within the pagination as 154, 155, and 156. First prelim [blank?] to Part Two not bound in as usual. Printer name John Nichols from colophon (page 333). Contemporary or near contemporary stamped vellum, edges speckled red, front hinge cracked but just holding, foxing to prelims, final leaves and near the plates, otherwise good. Bookplate of N. Vansittard to front paste-down, book label Winnard Bequest to front fly-leaf, unobtrusive blind stamps of the Wigan Free library. Contains a number of important contributions: Smeaton on Globes; Priestley on Phlogiston (three articles); E. W. Gray on Amphibia (Gray was Secretary to the Royal Society); Morgan on survival rates; Piazzi on the eclipse of the sun, Anderson on a bituminous lake in Trinidad; Baillie on changes in the ovary; Saunders on Bhutan and Tibet; Herschel on the discovery of a comet by his sister Caroline Herschel; a tabular presentation of the coming of spring by Robert Marsham; Waring on correspondent values, and on the resolution of attractive powers; Walker on cooling mercury; Herschel?s catalogue of a second thousand new nebulae; Maskelyne on vision, Nicholson on electricity; Milner on nitrous acid. Please note the condition problem with the front hinge and the slight foxing (see photos), but nevertheless in many respects a seminal volume, surprisingly rare in commerce. Herschel?s Observations on a comet (pages 151-153) continues the acknowledgement of his sister?s contribution to scientific discovery, one of the very earliest women whose work was recognised. Sir, The last time I was in town, you expressed a wish to see my observations on the comet which my sister Caroline Herschel discovered in the evening of the 21st of last December?(page 151).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Second. Second edition, expanded. London: Thomas Roycroft, 1672. Folio (12 1/16" x 7 7/16", 306mm x 189mm). [Full collation available.] Bound in later (early-XIXc?) morocco with a triple gilt fillet border. On the spine, six raised bands. Author and title gilt to the second panel, imprint gilt to the third. Double gilt fillets to the edges of the boards. Gilt inside dentelle. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block gilt. Blue silk marking ribbon. Rubbed generally, with some patches of skinning and scuffing. Long repair to the gutter of the title-leaf (re-mounted?) and its lower edge, neither affecting the text. Ink ownership signature of "Ri. Old." in an old hand to the title-page. Light marginal tanning throughout, with a handful of leaves moderately so. Damp-stain to the upper edge of the final six leaves. Some examples have a 24-page index (foll. 7X1-8C2), not present here. Sir John Marsham (1602-1685) was a polymathic scholar -- and an alumnus of St. John's College, Oxford -- who bent his attentions on one of the great questions of the XVIIc: chronology. Scaliger's 1583 De emendatione temporum was the firing-gun to those looking to solve the inconsistencies and disconnection of various individual sequences of events: those of the Bible, most of all, but also the emergent histories of Egypt and the Near East, as well as Ancient (viz. Greek and Roman) history. With increasing knowledge of celestial phenomena, chronologers sought to reconcile (synchronize) these individual sequences into a grand narrative of the history of the universe. Marsham's approach is to begin with Egyptian dynastic history -- as recorded principally by Manetho -- and to place the first year of the reign of Menes (now thought to have reigned somewhere around 3100 BC) 781 years after The Deluge. He then counts centuries upward (I-XIX) to the death of the Athenian tyrant Peisistratos (now conventionally given as 527 BC), aligning the events of the Persian and Assyrian and Greek and Roman worlds. The work is densely allusive (with side-notes, far superior to foot-notes) and larded with quotations in Greek. Four double-page letterpress tables provide a visual alignment of events. The work was initially published in 1666, but the only surviving institutional copy -- in the British Library -- has a manuscript note on the final page (280, the rest absent): "Exemplaria quingenta, huc usq impressa, incendio Londinensi perierunt, 4tº die Sept. aº 1666." (500 copies printed up till now perished in the London fire on the fourth day of September in the year 1666). Thus this 1672 edition -- another issue published by Roycroft lists booksellers at "Little Britain" -- is probably the earliest obtainable, and is apparently much expanded from the original. Later editions in 1676 and 1696 are much distorted. The ownership signature of "Ri. Old." is tantalizing; could it be the Rev. Richard Oldacres (1737?-1785), who was for 22 years headmaster of Woodborough school in Nottinghamshire? This is certainly the sort of work that would have served a country schoolteacher well, and the date of the hand is consistent with Rev. Oldacres's floruit. Wing M810.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1696 Marsham Chronicus Canon Jewish & Egyptian RITES Hebrew Greek Latin John Marsham was a 17th-century English historian known for his expertise and study on chronology from Old Testament history to Egypt and British. His most detailed and elaborate work was Chronicus Canon ; a work which distinguished Hebrew, Greek, and Egyptian histories and how they pertained to the Old Testament. According to the NGBD, Marsham, in this work, was the first person who proposed to the learned world the hypothesis of four collateral dynasties of Egyptian kings, reigning at the same time over different districts of that country; in order to reduce the extravagant chronology of the Egyptian records to a conformity with that of the Hebrew Scriptures. He also supposes that the Jews derived several of their rites from the Egyptians Item number: #8179 Price: $950 MARSHAM, John D.
