St. Petersburg Times Famous cities usually emerge where money is to be made. They may be at the conver-gence of two rivers, thus natural shipping sites. Or they may be on the fertile plains, thus rail and agricultural centers. Few cities are born and thrive for such an ethereal reason as good health. But St. Pe-tersburg did. On Point Pinellas, the air was warm and pure, the surround-ing waters clean and soothing, so five gen-erations ago settlers came to the peninsula to feel good. The money-motivated crowd followed but for the 100 years of its history, St. Peters-burg has retained its original radiance ? a city founded on the good life. Earliest residents took to fishing and slid-ing down Brantley's Pier toboggan into cool-ing Tampa Bay. The next generation took its pleasures in sing-alongs on the new Million Dollar Pier or a night of dancing at the Gold Dragon, the Green Lantern, and the Gangplank. During the 1940s, yet another generation catered to the thousands of World War II sol-diers that trained in St. Petersburg and then, in the post-war years, took its pleasure on the Gulf beaches and at the Spa Pool, at the So-larium, and dining in scores of fine restaurants opened in the booming 1950s. Mention the 1960s and 1970s to the city's next generation and memorable places of good times come forth: A new Bayway leading to Fort De Soto Park and weekends of shelling; the new Mu-seum of Fine Arts; an evening show at the just-completed Bayfront Center. And, of course, always the partying at the Coliseum. The fifth and present generation talks excitedly about sporting events at the ThunderDome, at the newly renovated Vinoy, at the priceless exhibitions displayed at the Florida Interna-tional Museum. Many of the great landmarks that enticed numerous generations are gone ? the opulent Florida Theater, the eateries like Wolfies, the Owl, Webb's City, and the Barrel Drive-In.
