Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich nicht in erster Linie mit der Darstellung der militärischen Operationen und Gefechte oder dem Leid der Soldaten, sondern mit den Entscheidungsprozessen innerhalb der politisch-militärischen Führung des Dritten Reiches hinsichtlich der Vorbereitung eines möglichen Endkampfes um die Reichshauptstadt. Das misslungene Attentat auf Adolf Hitler vom 20. Juli 1944 bildete dabei den Ausgangspunkt für eine Radikalisierung im Bereich der Rekrutierungsmassnahmen sowie für eine grundlegende Umwälzung der Machtverhältnisse im Gefolge des Diktators. Im Angesicht der vorrückenden Roten Armee wurden Mobilisierung, Aufstellung und Einsatz der bei der Verteidigung eingesetzten militärischen Einheiten und damit letztendlich auch das Schicksal Berlins zu einem Spielball im Kompetenzstreit zwischen NSDAP, SS und Wehrmacht.
