First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. S. Hurok Presents Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, Edited by Martin Feinstein, was published by Gilman Kraft in 1964. Not an ex-library copy, this approximately 9" X 11 3/4", 49-year-old, softcover offering, running to 24 pages, is in VG condition. There is some very modest yellowing of pages of text, and mild creasing of random corners of same is seen, but not overly so. From the start, with a highly informative, 3-4 page history of The Bolshoi--its foundational roots can be established as far back as 1773--entitled "Petrovka and Theatre Square, Moscow", this engrossing, over-sized program booklet provides a window into the worlds of both high culture, in the form of, arguably, the most esteemed dance group in the world, and of S.(Sol?) Hurok, the legendary producer/promoter who, in a relatively short time, came to be known, simply, as "The Impresario". At the time of this offering's publication, prima ballerina and lead male dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet were Raissa Struchkova and Boris Khokhlov, respectively. Other principal soloists included such as Liudmilla Bogomolova, Natalia Filippova, Tatiana Popko, Vladimir Tikhonov, Alexander Lapauri, and Shamil Yagudin. The troupe was under the direction of Asaf Messerer, Ballet Master, and Georgi Zhemchuzhin served as The Bolshoi's Lead Conductor. The group would perform such ballets as "Chopiniana", "Ballet School"(within which were included a small number of very young, local, American girls, auditioned and chosen by Messerer himself), "Don Quixote", "Walpurgis Night", and "Swan Lake". Fairly peppered with frequent black and white photographs, several of them full page, pretty much all of the principal players/performers are shown. Several of the lead dancers' pictures are accompanied by brief but fairly detailed bios, as is Mr. Hurok's. NOTE: The VARIOUS ADVERTISEMENTS within our offering are, in their own way, almost as interesting to peruse as the content promoting The Bolshoi. Featured are businesses such as BOAC, Estee Lauder, Longines Symphonette, Danskin, Capezio, and Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc. The back cover section, besides, is actually a full-page ad trumpeting the upcoming 1964-65 season/list of attractions available for booking at Hurok Attractions, Inc./Hurok Concerts, Inc., New York and Los Angeles, and features everything from Sopranos(like Roberta Peters, Mary Costa, Adele Addison) to Contraltos and Tenors(such as Marian Anderson and Jan Peerce) to Conductors(like Antal Dorati, Lorin Maazel, and Akeo Watanabe) to Pianists(such as Artur Rubinstein, Daniel Barenboim, Van Cliburn, and Byron Janis) to Guitarists(like Andres Segovia and Julian Bream)--I could go on, but space does not permit! If you're still with me, you already know what's involved here, I'm thinking. This is a most special book, all things considered. Thank you very much!!

Paperback. Condition: New. The image of a tortured genius working in near isolation has long dominated our conceptions of the artist's studio. Examples are abound: think Jackson Pollock dripping resin on a cicada carcass in his shed in the Hamptons. But times have changed; ever since Andy Warhol declared his art space a 'factory', artists have begun to envision themselves as the leaders of production teams, and their sense of what it means to be in the studio has altered just as dramatically as their practices. "The Studio Reader" pulls back the curtain from the art world to reveal the real activities behind artistic production. What does it mean to be in the studio? What is the space of the studio in the artist's practice? How do studios help artists envision their agency and, beyond that, their own lives? This forward-thinking anthology features an all-star array of contributors, ranging from Svetlana Alpers, Bruce Nauman, and Robert Storr to Daniel Buren, Carolee Schneemann, and Buzz Spector, each of whom locates the studio both spatially and conceptually - at the center of an art world that careens across institutions, markets, and disciplines.A companion for anyone engaged with the spectacular sites of art at its making, "The Studio Reader" reconsiders this crucial space as an actual way of being that illuminates our understanding of both artists and the world they inhabit.
