Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The dynamics of ancient Judahs economy are among the most important, but also neglected and least understood, aspects of ancient Israels history. The essays in this volume address this gap from a multidisciplinary perspective, involving archeology, biblical studies, economics, epigraphy, ancient history, Jewish studies, and theology. The essays focus on particular issues in the economy of ancient Judah and its neighbors during the late monarchy and the Neo-Babylonian, Persian, and Hellenistic periods. Some of them evaluate the theoretical models used to understand the inner workings of ancient agrarian economies, while others explore rural economies, the forces of regeneration and degeneration in particular regions, the settlement histories of different areas, and the exploitation of depopulated land in Judah and Idumea. Essays in the volume also address population growth, urbanization, the role of diverse temple towns (such as Babylon and Jerusalem) in regional market economies, the literary portrayal of patronclient relationships, symmetrical and asymmetrical relations in international trade, and the views of urban elites toward agrarian economic developments. Yet others discuss family economicspolicies of reproduction, gender roles, family size, and household hierarchiesin Judah and ancient Persia. Many of the essays appearing in this volume were originally delivered as papers in special sessions devoted to these topics at annual meetings of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies and the European Association of Biblical Studies. The scholars participating in this international project conduct their research at institutions in Canada, Germany, Israel, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States. Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Staple-bound in card covers. Covers toned; spot of discoloration on rear cover. Prices realized are penciled-in for most of the day-two items (the Oriental part of the auction). 30 pp. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. 330 items cataloged. Auction catalog including Robert Balzer's collection of Oriental art pieces (mostly Chinese with some Japanese, Siamese/Thai, Tibetan, Nepalese, and Korean items). A curious note is penciled next to item 211A (15th Century Sesshu Six-Panel Screen) which reads: ''Alan Watts says worth $15,000.'' Watts certainly had taken notice of the Sesshu screen at Balzer's home, so much so that he specifically mentions it in his 1972 autobiography. He writes, in detailing some of the fantastic private homes he visited in Southern California, ''Robert Balzer's Japanese fantasy, high on the Hollywood hills, with polished wooden corridors, white carpets, Chinese statuary, and a screen by Sesshu, where this celebrated gourmet, chef, winemaster, and Buddhist entertained us one evening to an imitation of Merce Cunningham dancing to the music of John Cage.''. Lucky bidder, the item sold for $2000. Robert Balzer (1912-2011) was one of California's earliest and most influential wine writers. He was also an educator, author and restaurateur. During the 1950s, while on assignment as a press photographer, he studied Buddhism at a Cambodian temple, becoming an ordained teaching monk.…

hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Sg - Ungelesenes Mängelexemplar, gestempelt, mit leichten Lagerspuren - This ambitious and engaging book sets itself the task of combining a wide range of approaches to cast new light on the form and function of several ancient Jewish letters in a variety of languages. The focus of The Performance of Ancient Jewish Lettersis on applying a new emerging field of performance theory to texts and arguing that letters and other documents were not just read in silence, as is normal today, but were 'performed,' especially when they were addressed to a community. A distinctive feature of this book consists of being one of the first to apply the approach of performance criticism to ancient Jewish letters. Previous treatments of ancient letters have not given enough consideration to their oral context; however, this book prompts the reader to 'listen' sympathetically with the audience. The Performance focuses close attention on the ways in which the engagement of the audience during the performance of a text might be read from traces present in the text itself. This book invites the audience to hear a fresh reading of a family letter from Hermopolis, concerning ugly tunics and castor oil; festal letters, about issues surrounding the celebration of Passover, Purim and Hanukkah; a diaspora letter on how to live in a foreign land; and also an official letter concerning the building of the Jerusalem temple. These letters will help us understand a text from the Dead Sea Scrolls, namely, MMT. Marvin L. Miller argues for the centrality of performance in the life of Jews of the Second Temple period, an area of study that has been traditionally neglected. The Performanceadvances the fields of orality and epistolography and supplements other scholars' works in those fields.…
