First Edition. 1975, first edition, 215pp. The price-clipped dust jacket has fading to spine and light wear to edges. Gilt to spine bright. Content clean and bright, binding tight. 13 illustrations in black and white and 2. Top edge blue. A very good copy. "Orkney and Shetland are the two least known archipelagos in the British Isles. Orkney is separated from John O'Groats by seven miles of stormy firth; nearly 170 miles further on is Muckle Flugga, the most northerly islet of Shetland. They have much in common: in each the grey stone houses and almost treeless landscape are scourged in winter by stinging gales; they share the long days and tranced twilights of the northern summer; originally Norwegian, they have for 500 years been part of Scotland. But the legends, folk-tales and customs a unique blend of Norse and lowland Scottish influences contrast markedly: Orkney, with gentle slopes and fertile fields, is a land of farmers, while the Shetlanders wrest a living from the hills and moors and from the surrounding seas. Common to both are many work customs and rites connected with birth, marriage and death, as well as many beliefs about witches, which figure prominently in Mr Marwick's survey. Himself an Orcadian, Ernest Marwick has drawn on a wide range of written and oral sources. He gives full source references and includes a selection of comparative folk-tales. He is well known, especially in Scotland, as a writer and broadcaster.".

"Ernest Walker Marwick was born in 1915 in Evie, Orkney. He left school aged ten, and thereafter was almost entirely self-educated. Working on the farm where he was brought up and then in a Kirkwall bookshop, he began writing in his teens and published articles and verse in newspapers and magazines. In 1955 he joined the staff of the Orkney Herald, where his contributions included a weekly column on Orkney folklore and history. In the early 1960s he became a freelance writer and broadcaster, publishing numerous articles in Britain and abroad, and making over 800 broadcasts for the BBC. He lectured widely and was founder member, and subsequently chairman of the Orkney Heritage Society. In 1975 he received the freedom of the City and Royal Burgh of Kirkwall, and the following year the University of Edinburgh made him an Honorary Master of Arts. He died in 1977. Ernest Marwick was compiler and editor of An Anthology of Orkney Verse (1949), editor of Walter Traill Dennison's Orkney Folklore and Traditions (1961), and author of The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland (1975).".
