8vo. 431, [1]; 112; contemporary full black calf, spine scuffed and crackled, prelims and terminals foxed, hinges cracked; the fore-margins of the early and last leaves are frayed, and a prior owner appears to have reglued the first and last gatherings back into the binding, affecting text of last leaf and one letter on the verso of the title page; in all, a good copy. With an inserted slip ahead of the first title, inscribed in ink: "Mary T. Dorr / from / Candace C. Dorr / June 27th, 1839." And, on the front cover, stamped in gilt: "Mary T. Dorr / June 27th 1839." Slight contemporary annotations on the front endpaper in pencil, and the occasional underlining in the text of the N.T., almost certainly all by Mary Dorr. Mary Throop Dorr (1811-1869), daughter of Sullivan Dorr, sister of Thomas W. Dorr and Candace Dorr, was married to Samuel Ames on June 27, 1839, in Providence, R.I. Evidently this Bible was a wedding present from Candace to her sister. Ames was a Rhode Island legislator and later chief of the Supreme Court. During the Dorr Rebellion he did not support his brother-in-law, Thomas.
