Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good - Original. Photographic Illustrations throughout. (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. The History of the foundation is a sequel to Saint Theresa's Life, written by herself in obedience to her confessor. The Life brings the story up to the completion of the first foundation, that of St. Joseph's convent at Avila ; and here the History of the foundations takes it up. - Topics: Carmelites - Spain, Monasticism and religious orders for women. - CONDITION: The original dustjacket accompanies this book. It was chipped at the top and bottom of the spine and a couple of the corners so I trimmed a little off each of the prelims to repair from the dustjacket itself and had to ink in a couple of letters at the top of the spine. - Price of 4/6 net on the spine. Decoration and publication details to the spine also. - The dustjacket was intact [apart from the aforementioned] and there is no other lettering or decoration anywhere on the dustjacket. Colours faded in general. Small darker mark to front lower panel. A very unusual dustjacket which I have housed in a removable plastic protective sleeve, which is 116 years old. - Blue hardback cloth boards with gold/gilt lettering to the spine. Very nice clean and tightly bound condition. First and last few pages are more browned than the rest of the pages. Many photographic illustrations adorn the text throughout the book. The frontispiece is a portrait of Saint Theresa which has been reproduced by kind permission of Mr. E. Nash, from the portrait in the possession of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Valladolid. - Father Jerome Gracian, being her Superior, caused the original to be made, as he says, 'to mortify her and because otherwise there would have been no portrait of her at all', by a lay Brother, Juan de la Miseria, who was but a poor artist. It is said that when the Saint saw it, she said laughingly to the artist, 'God forgive you, Brother John; after making me go through no one knows what, you have turned me out ugly and blear eyed'. - There are a further ten illustrative accompaniments throughout the text. - Text ends on page 275. After this, there is a fold out map which is in a fine condition, then follows a 6 page index, making a total of 282 pages which are clean and tightly bound. - E N D. - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it.
