Small quarto, hardcover, fine in red boards with gilt lettering and design on cover. 297 pp. Sandglass laid in. Edited from His Notebooks. Parkman's work may be the most familiar piece of western travel writing to modern readers. The exciting adventures o…f the young Boston Brahmin loose on the Plains makes excellent reading. Field remarks: "Mr. Parkman had all the genuine love of adventure of a frontiersman, the taste for the picturesque and romantic of an artist, and the skill in narration of an accomplished raconteur. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: "The discovery of Francis Parkman's journals in a Boston attic where they had lain undisturbed for nearly fifty years was one of the most dramatic incidents in the annals of American scho…larship. In vivid detail, the early journals narrate the hazardous wilderness journeys which gave him his first-hand knowledge of the scenes of his histories; which took him through the unexplored reaches of New England, into Canada, and out to the Great Lakes region; and which brought him fact to face with the Indians, pioneers, trappers and mountain men of the frontier West." These two hard cover books are bound in bright blue cloth boards with sharp gilt lettering of the titles on the spine. Each book is protected by a printed paper dust jacket. The endpapers are decorated with maps of his journeys thru the northeastern U.S. and Canada. Please see the photos of the Table of Contents and the List of Illustrations for your further information. Condition: These two books are in very good condition. The dust jacket are a bit dust dulled and show some toning, particularly around their edges. There is some edge wear including small tears and chips to both. The hard covers are clean and bright, particularly the spine where the gilt titles are still vivid. Inside, the books are unmarked and so too, the interior pages which are bright and clean throughout, without toning or foxing. There is some darkening in the hinge areas of both books, no doubt as a result of the acids of the binding glues. All the hinges are intact and the bindings are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders. Various (illustrator).
