Covering a period of several centuries, the necrolgies provide unique insights into the lives, deaths, and commemoration of members of the monastic community. The author provides a detailed analysis of the entries in the necrolgies, revealing patterns of mortality, burial practices, social networks, and spiritual beliefs. A particularly valuable aspect of the study is the inclusion of entries not only for monks but also for lay people and women, often marginalized in other historical sources. Through a combination of meticulous research and accessible prose, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and spiritual world of people living in a medieval Alpine community, while also contributing to a broader understanding of the role of religious institutions in medieval society. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an assemblage of death notices collected by an anonymous author in the 12th century and supplemented by multiple hands over the course of the following three centuries. In short, it is a record of who lived and died in a Benedictine monastery tucked away in southeastern Austria during a tumultuous period in European history. The notices include anyone connected to the monastery: monks, abbots, priests, nuns, farmers, and even visiting dignitaries. Though some entries consist of only a name and date, others include additional details, such as cause of death, occupation, and familial connections. In addition to its genealogical value, the book is also a priceless historical document, providing glimpses into the daily life, social structure, and religious practices of a medieval monastic community and the surrounding society.
