Sul tema, scrutato ormai da innumervoli interpreti, la genialità storiografica di… Albert Mathiez (1874-1932) ci ha offerto una lettura che è rimasta classica; fra le pieghe della Grande Rivoluzione, egli ha saputo rimettere in luce i diversi sommovimenti che sono confluiti in quel più generale evento storico, ricostruendo la "rivolta nobiliare" che precedette gli stati Generali, richiamando l'importanza delle municipalités provinciali, e ridando identità alle forze sociali e politiche che furono interpreti di quegli anni cruciali. Si deve a Mathiez, ancora, se Robespierre ha perduto i connotati sinistri attribuitigli dalla precedente critica storica ed ha preso il suo posto di protagonista, ancorché controverso, della nostra età moderna. Con I Termidoriani e Il Direttorio, grazie alla maestria storiografica di Georges Lefebvre (1875-1959), l'opera di Mathiez trova la sua giusta continuazione. Nei due volumi, la narrazione e l'interpretazione del decennio che ha sconvolto la Francia, e che ha diffuso nel mondo intero l'idea stessa di rivoluzione, si susseguono e si compenetrano. Uomini rimasti celebri e più oscuri comprimari, istituzioni dell'antico regime e nuovi rituali campeggiano in quell'arco di tempo che, dalla convocazione degli Stati Generali (il 5 maggio 1788) andò fino a quel fatidico 18 brumaio (il 10 novembre 1799) da cui prese avvio un'altra epopea leggendaria: quella di Napoleone Bonaparte.
