Drawn and engraved by Francois-Nicolas Martinet (1760-1800). From The Ornithologia, sive synopsis methodica by Mathurin Jaques Brisson of 1760. Signed in the plate lower left. Size of sheet: 14" x 10". Size of image: 11.50" x 9.25". Francois-Nicolas Martinet was a French engineer, engraver and naturalist. He engraved plates for numerous works on natural history but he specialized in ornithology. Most notable are these produced for The Ornithologia. Condition: Near Fine. The engraving is exceptionally clean and fresh. It is marked where it would have been folded in the book by two strong creases and two faint. The surround of the engraved part of the image overlaps the edge of the paper very slightly. This would not however present a problem were the image to be mounted for framing. There are several small spots of foxing on the print, a couple outside of the image to the left, a couple to the left of the ostrich's neck, and one to the right of the flower. There is a white mark on the wing of the cassowary that looks like paint.
