Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Francois-Nicolas Martinet (illustrator). Petite Sarcelle, male. Sarcelle de Ferroe. Small and Faroe Teals. An original hand-coloured copper plate engraving. Drawn and engraved by Francois-Nicolas Martinet (1760-1800). From The Ornithologia, sive synopsis methodica by Mathurin Jaques Brisson of 1760. Signed in the plate lower left. Size of sheet: 13.25" x 9.75". Size of image: 11.25" x 9.50". Francois-Nicolas Martinet was a French engineer, engraver and naturalist. He engraved plates for numerous works on natural history but he specialized in ornithology. Most notable are these produced for The Ornithologia. Condition: Near Fine. The engraving is exceptionally clean and fresh. It is marked in three places where it would have been folded in the book, with lesser creases also showing. The paper on which the image is printed is not evenly shaped. This is in consequence of its manufacture, not because it has been cut. The engraved part of the image almost overlaps the edge of the paper it is printed on. This would have to be taken into consideration if it were to be framed. There is one spot of foxing on the surround at the right hand edge.
