Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Hand Written and Signed Letter by Poet Matthew Arnold to Henry James Maine. Letter undated. A handwritten and signed letter by the writer Matthew Arnold to Maine thanking him for his help in passing over notes to the committee and other contrite chores. Matthew Arnold 1822 - 1888 was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. He was also an inspector of schools for thirty-five years, and supported the concept of state-regulated secondary education. Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822-1888, was a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. He is famous for the thesis outlined in his book Ancient Law that law and society developed "from status to contract." According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Because of this thesis, Maine can be seen as one of the forefathers of modern legal anthropology, legal history and sociology of law. Size 180mm x 115mm Condition is good. Light folding creases. Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Hand Written and Signed Letter by Matthew Arnold. Letter dated 1885. A handwritten and signed letter by the writer Matthew Arnold on his work as a schools inspector and his book 'Popular Education in France'. 'Dear Sir, It is now many years since I saw the schools of the Christian Brothers. They are not to be compared with the Realschulen of Germany, for all that I saw were schools for the people, Volkschulen. What I thought of them you will find in my report on "Popular Education in France", which will probably, either in the form of a Bluebook, or in the form of a volume published by Messrs Longman, be found in the public libraries of Birmingham. Believe me, with many thanks for your kind expressions, Your faithful servant, Matthew Arnold' Matthew Arnold 1822 - 1888 was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools.
