Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xvi, 176, pages. Some pencil marks to text. Pencil comment/addition to item 4984 on page 134 observed. Pencil notes on rep and inside the back cover. Preface, Symbols of Contributing Libraries, Dated Diaries, Undated Diaries, Index. This annotated list of American diaries, nearly all of them unpublished, some published only in part, is a supplement to the author's American Diaries published in 1945 and revised in 1959, which was restricted to published documents. The present list contains over 5.000 name entries and a much larger number of manuscripts and copies of them. It is the harvest of over twenty years of collection, and it is put out now, not because it is in any way complete, but rather because since about 1965 new contributions have become few. Each entry gives the name of the writer, the time-span of the diary, a brief characterization of its contents and interest, and a succinct statement (using Library of Congress symbols) of the places where the diary and copies are located. The arrangement is chronological, according to the beginning years of the documents, and within each year the arrangement is alphabetical by author, beginning with anonymous authors who are arranged by order of months of beginning. Undated diaries are gathered at the end. An author-index is provided at the end, and cross-references are given with the body of the bibliography to other diaries by the same writers. William Richard Matthews (1905-1975) was born in London, England. He was an English professor at UCLA and director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Professor Mathews was an authority on British and American diaries, medieval literature and the history of the English language. His published works include Cockney Past and Present: A Short History of the Dialect of London, comp. (with Roy Harvey Pearce), American Diaries: An Annotated Bibliography of American Diaries Written Prior to the Year 1861 (1945); comp., British Diaries: An Annotated Bibliography of British Diaries Written Between 1442 and 1942 (1950), editor (with Robert Latham), Samuel Pepys, The Diary of Samuel Pepys: A New and Complete Transcription (1970-74).
