Exemplar mit starken Mängeln (innen). Handgebundener moderner, hellbrauner Lederband auf 5 imit. Bünden, mit etwas Rücken- und Deckelvergoldung, Innenkantenvergoldung sowie rotem Seidenmoirebezug auf Spiegeln und fl. Vorsätzen - Einband signiert "Geo Kerels". Sprache: Französisch, Mit Holzschnitt-Portrait-Vignette auf dem Titel und ca. 1035 Textholzschnitten - einige (recht laienhaft) koloriert. Der moderne Handeinband gering berieben - innen leider ein Exemplar mir starken Mängeln: erste und letzte Blätter stärker angerändert - Fehlstellen teils professionell, aber nicht sonderlich schön mit angesetztem Japanpapier ergänzt - leichter Textverlust beim Titel, bei einem Blatt der Einleitung (+4) und bei Blatt AAA3 (Table des matieres) und etwas Textverlust bei Blatt AAA4 (Table), dem letzten hier vorhandenen Blatt; es fehlen das 9. nn. Blatt ++3 (Epistre) und die letzten beiden Blätter (letztes Blatt der "Table des matieres" und das letzte weisse Blatt); zu Beginn und am Schluß auch etwas fleckig, wasserfleckig und fingerfleckig - wenige weitere Blätter leicht wasserfleckig oder fleckig; Titel etwas gebräunt - ansonsten nur manchmal gering gebräunt; letzte Blätter in den Ecken etwas eseslsohrig bzw. hier auch mit kleinen Eckabrissen (nur bei den beiden letzten Blättern, wie schon beschrieben, mit größeren Eckabrissen und leichtem bzw. beim letzten Blatt etwas größerem Textverlust); am Kopf knapp beschnitten - bei einigen Blättern Seitenüberschriften und Seitenzahlen angeschnitten (dann leichter Text- bzw. Ziffernverlust); einige der Holzschnitte koloriert oder ankoloriert - altes, aber laienhaftes Kolorit. Die Holzschnitte zeigen meist Pflanzen, aber auch Tiere und im letzten Kapitel (S. 817ff) mit 6 Holzschnitten von Apparaten zum Destillieren. RARE FIRST FRENCH EDITION of a 16th-century treatise in botany, where the author - Pietro Andrea Gregorio Mattioli (Matthiolus) (1501-1577), a renowned doctor and naturalist, described 100 new plants and coordinated the medical botany of his time in his Discorsi ("Commentaries") on the Materia Medica of Dioscorides. The first edition of Mattioli`s work appeared in 1544 in Italian. There were several later editions in Italian and translations into Latin (Venice,1554), Czech, (Prague,1562), German (Prague, 1563) and the present lavishly illustrated French edition (Lyon,1572). 385x250mm. 138+819+22 pages (altogether 973 pages). Marbled rebound board Hardcover with brown leather ribbed gilt spine. Cover scratched and worn. Cover and spine rubbed. stained and partly peeled. Cover edges, corners, spine edges and hinges worn/peeling. Spine gilt partly faded or missing. Small hole on front whitepage. Title page repaired - text partly missing. First few pages bottom corner repaired - text partly missing on several pages. Page 108/109 slightly torn with small damage to text. Page 239/240 bottom half taped - text readable. Several pages stained due to pressed flower - text readable. Few pages slightly stained and/or age-stained - no damage to text. Text block upper edge slightly stained. Pages yellowing and slightly wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare profusely illustrated 16th-century treatise in botany has suffered some damage, but is still in good reading condition. Reliure en plein veau brun, coupe orné, tranches rouges, dos à 6 nerfs, caissons décorations florales, pièce de titre en cuire havane. Plats usés, avec quelques petites manques, coins légèrement émoussés , mors fendus et restaurés. Petit manque à la page 11, dernière 30 pages intéressé par une tache de liquide, dont une dizaine ont été restaurées ou renforcées. Dernière page arrachée, sans manque dans le texte. Dans l'ensemble, ouvrage très solide et en bonnes conditions. Portrait de l'auteur et privilège au verso de la page de titre, suivi d'une épître de Jean des Moulins (traducteur) à Marc de Beaufort, compte d'Allais, marquis de Canillac. Selon Baudrier («Bibliographie lyonnaise. Recherches sur les imprimeurs, libraires, relieurs et fondeurs de lettres de Lyon au XVIe siècle par le Président Baudrier, publiées et continuées par J. Baudrier. Neuvième série», pag. 369), cette édition est la réimpression de celle de 1572. Ex-libris de Monsieur Guignebert, Trésorier des Canaux de M. le Duc d'Orléans collé au contre-plat. Probablement M Guignebert, en renouvelant la reliure de l'ouvrage vers 1747, a du effacer les ex-libris précedents, donc il a noté à la main, au verso de la page de titre, les anciens propriétaires de l'ouvrage à partir de 1593. Pietro Andrea Mattioli est unmédecinet unbotanisteitalien, né le12 mars 1501àSienneet mort vers1578àTrentede lapeste. Il exerce dans différentes villes et devient le médecin de l'archiducFerdinandpuis de l'empereurMaximilien II.Cet ouvrage est le chef-d'uvre botanique de Mattioli,qui paraît pour la première en1544en italien, avant d'être traduit en latin en 1554. Le succès de ce livre est immense et on estime que 32 000 exemplaires de sesCommentairesont été imprimés dans une soixantaine de versions en plusieurs langues.

Cette édition est illustrée par un portrait de Matthiole à pleine page, repris sur le dernier feuillet et plus de 1000 bois gravés dans le texte : des plantes, des animaux, des scènes de la vie à la campagne. On y apprend que les génitoires de l'hippopotame séchées, broyées sont bonnes contre les morsures de serpents. Ou encore que la chaire de vipères, cuite et mangée, éclaircit la vue. Elle comprend à la fin un traité sur la distillation. Titre en noir et rouge avec grande vignette gravée; texte sur deux colonnes. Cet ouvrage, très utilisé par les médecins et les botanistes à travers les siècles, se trouve presque toujours incomplet et en mauvais état. Auréole d'humidité dans le bas des tous derniers feuillets, le dernier est froissé. Petits travaux de vers sans gravité dans la marge intérieure de quelques feuillets en milieu d'ouvrage, papier un peu bruni dû à la qualité du papier, mais bel exemplaire, complet, dans sa première reliure. We learn that dried, crushed hippopotamus genitals are good against snake bites. Or that viper flesh, cooked and eaten, clears the eyes. It ends with a treatise on distillation. Title in black and red with large engraved vignette; two-column text. This work, much used by physicians and botanists over the centuries, is almost always incomplete and in poor condition. Dampness aureole at the bottom of the very last pages, the last one creased. Minor worm damage in the inner margin of a few leaves in the middle of the book, paper a little browned due to the quality of the paper, but a fine, complete copy in its first binding. -.
