Partez à la découverte du vaudou africain à travers cet ouvrage. Henning Christoph est né en 1944 à Grimma, en Allemagne. En 1950, sa famille s'installe aux Etats-Unis, où il étudie l'ethnologie et le journalisme à l'Université du Maryland. De retour en Allemagne, il apprend la photographie auprès d'Otto Steinert à l'Université…des arts Folkwang d'Essen. Sa carrière évolue alors à un rythme vertigineux : en tant que photojournaliste, il travaille pour de nombreux magazines internationaux dont Life, National Geographic, Geo, Time, Le Figaro et Stern. A partir de 1993, il décide d'abandonner le monde du reportage de commande pour se consacrer exclusivement au continent africain et à ses secrets. Plusieurs fois lauréat des concours du World Press Photo, il prend part à des expéditions qui le mènent auprès des populations les plus isolées et dans les lieux les plus reculés de la planète. Bien que réputé et donc très sollicité, chaque nouveau séjour en Afrique ravive sa passion pour ce continent, en particulier pour l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Dès son premier voyage, il a l'intuition que, loin des yeux du monde, se cache un trésor de savoirs et de sagesse auquel aucun reportage purement commercial ne peut rendre justice ni être utile. Au cours des années suivantes, Christoph parcourt le Bénin afin de s'immerger dans les secrets de la religion vaudou et de mieux la comprendre. Il en revient avec un livre de photographies époustouflantes et commence à constituer une collection d'objets de rituel qu'il alimente à chaque voyage. Plusieurs livres suivent, consacrés également aux pays voisins, alors que se tissent des liens étroits avec les communautés de la diaspora africaine en Amérique. En 2000, Christoph fonde en solitaire le Soul of Africa Museum à Essen. Ce lieu lui permet enfin d'exposer sa collection à un plus large public. Ce site comprend en outre un espace permettant, par une approche pédagogique, de présenter directement à des individus de tous âges, seuls ou en groupes, la diversité des cultures africaines et leurs définitions. Christoph commence à organiser des expositions dans les plus grands musées d'Allemagne. Il y invite des guérisseurs et des représentants de la culture africaine. Il publie plusieurs nouveaux livres et réalise trois documentaires qui abordent la magie et les méthodes de guérison. Ce nouveau livre, Secrets, est essentiellement consacré aux découvertes réalisées par Christoph depuis 2010 au Cameroun et auprès des communautés de la diaspora camerounaise. Il a pu pénétrer dans des contrées jusqu'ici interdites aux Blancs et nombre des rites et coutumes qui s'y trouvent documentés sont en grande partie inconnus de l'Occident ou considérés comme éteints. Voici donc une formidable occasion de rétablir la vérité.
