Softcover. Condition: Good. Narrated by an Unimane of the Boti of Karongoa n Uea on Nikunau in 1934 / transcribed by Tione Baraka of Taboiaki on Beru; translated by G. H. Eastman; edited, annotated and revised by H. E. Maude. The story of the Karongoa clan from its origin and development in Samoa to modern times in Kiribati. It was dictated early in the 1930s to Tione Baraka, a member of Karongoa, by an Elder of the clan in Nikunau. This elder did not wish his name to be disclosed at the time, and no record of it has survived. This work represents a remarkable feat of memory. It tells the story of the first boti, or clan, founded in Samoa - the members of which later lead the migration to Kiribati from Samoa. Signed. Signed by H. E. Maude. 120 pages.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 124 pp., illustrations, bibliography. some foxing (age spots) on outside edges. When the Banabans had to leave their ancestral homeland as a result of the devastation caused by the phosphate mining industry they settled on the island of Rabi in Fiji. Unfortunately the traumatic upheavals which the community has been through since the beginning of the century, and particularly since the Japanese occupation, have resulted in an understandable loss of confidence and a questioning of their identity and future. The Rabi born, in particular, have little conception of their rich historical heritage and former culture. This book, therefore, has been prepared to provide the present and future generations of Rabi islanders with all that has been recorded of their former way of life on Banaba from the time their forbears first settled it over a thousand years ago and created a prosperous, self-supporting and happy society numbering several thousand. The work will be of interest as well to a wider readership since it is the first to detail the settlement of an isolated Pacific Island, the development on it over the centuries of a community superbly integrated into its unique environment, and its final reluctant abandonment owing to external pressures beyond their control.

Soft Covers. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st. Banaba Island lies to the north of the Solomon Islands , one of a group formerly known as the Ocean Islands. According to the editors the Banabans of historic times (more that 1000 years ago) had created a prosperous, self-supporting and happy society living in harnony with its envoronment. In the early 1900s, in colonial times, Banaba was target for the phosphate miners. The small island quickly became devestated, a situation not helped by Japanese occupation in WWII. Eventually, with the island unable to sustain its residents, they were relocated to a Fijiian Island of Rabi. By then much of the history, culture and traditions of the original Banabans was lost. This book was "prepared to provide trhe present and future generations of Rabi islanders with all that has been recorded of their former way of life on Banaba." The book is based on the papers of the editors, those of Sir Arthur Grimble and published works. This a little used ex-library copy, first edition of 1994, 124 pages including bibliography, nine b/w photos, map.
