Notre exemplaire contient 48 planches (46 + 2 suppl.) hors texte dessinées et lithographiées en couleurs par Adolphe Maugendre et tirées chez Auguste Bry à Paris, auxquelles s'ajoute un titre lithographié en rouge, noir et doré à la date de 1865. On y voit la cathédrale de Bayeux, les églises de Saint-Patrice, Saint-Loup-Hors et le monastère de Saint-Vigor-le-Grand, l'hôtel de ville, la poissonnerie et un spécimen de la tapisserie, ainsi que divers châteaux et monuments historiques des cantons de Balleroy, Caumont, Issigny, Ryes et Trévières, représentés d'après nature avec le souci du détail et l'exactitude que l'on reconnaît aux uvres du lithographe d'Ingouville. Le titre de la Notice (daté 1862) annonce 48 vues, la table des planches n'en dénombre que 46. Notre exemplaire possède 2 gravures de Maugendre supplémentaires aux 46 planches : une Façade de la Cathédrale et l'Avenue du chateau d'Etreham. Non référencé dans le Frère II,142.

A rare and sought-after volume on Nancy and its surroundings. Along with a historical and descriptive text, this work contains 30 full-page chromolithographs (190 x 123 mm) drawn and lithographed by Adolphe Maugendre and printed by Wiener fils, a Nancy-based editor. In addition to these 30 lithographs, this volume contains a colored lithographed title, a double-page colored plate, a black engraving and a folding plan of Nancy. Adolphe Magendre, landscaper and lithographer, was born in 1809 close to Le Havre, in Ingouville. He died in Paris in 1895. "Maugendre's collections are rare and sought-after". Bénézit. Very finely drawn and with great precision in the details, these lithographs subtly evoke everyday life in Nancy during the 19th century in front of selected monuments or in famous places. We can see the city hall, Stanislas square, the Cathedral, the churches of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours and Saint-Sebastien, the door of the citadel, the Ducal Palace, the castles of Craon, Fléville and Lunéville? The plates come with an historical notice about the city and its surroundings by Henri Lepage, a French historian specialized in the history of Lorraine. He adds in his note to the reader that "the goal of the following pages is to erase the unfavorable impressions that visitors may have about Nancy, and to destroy the general indifference of those who have lived in the city for a long time." This copy is bound in the oblong 4to format whereas common copies are in 8vo format. That is why the text was printed in two by two columns on each page. The plate L'Eglise Saint Sébastien (Saint-Sebastien church) was bound twice in this copy. Fine copy with nice colors preserved in its original condition. Handwritten ex-libris in black ink on the title-page Af. Marscowski (?).

The series includes views of Moresnet, Welkenraedt, Rabotraedt, Angleur, Saint Léonard (Liège), Valentin-Cocq and Bray, all beautifully rendered by the French landscape painter Adolphe Maugendre (1809-1895).The series shows the complete process of producing zinc, from the zinc ore extraction to the stoking, pouring and refilling of the crucible, and finally the production of sheets of zinc in a rolling mill. It includes four detailed views of the Saint-Léonard plant (one, surprisingly, featuring a woman and two children). In the 20th century the Vieille Montagne society, together with a number of other mining and smelting companies, evolved into "Umicore", a global materials technology and recycling group still active today.Some light marginal spotting, the title-page more severely, title-page with a tiny tear, otherwise in very good condition. Its history goes back to 1806, when Jean-Jacques Daniel Dony (1759-1819) was granted the sole mining rights to the calamine deposits of Vieille Montagne (or Altenberg), between Liège and Aachen. Dony had invented a new method for extracting zinc and casting it in ingots. In 1809 he established a rolling mill at Saint-Léonard, apparently the first plant for the industrial production of zinc. The series shows the complete process of producing zinc, from the zinc ore extraction to the stoking, pouring and refilling of the crucible, and finally the production of sheets of zinc in a rolling mill. It includes four detailed views of the Saint-Léonard plant (one, surprisingly, featuring a woman and two children).
