Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. This is a small format hardback book (approx. 7" x 5"). The book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book is in generally clean condition. There is some light bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are generally clean and bright, though there are occasional spots of foxing throughout, and both front and rear endpapers larger spots of foxing. There is a former owner's inked name on the front pastedown page, and on the front endpaper, an inked notice that this was the property of the Army YMCA NO 8 Camp Six, (A. J. Or U. J. , or NJ uncertain? ) June 13, 1919. "If Clara Bow was the âItâ girl, Max Joseph Exner was the âItâ man. Variously described as a âspecialist in sex education, â âa public health officer with the YMCAâ and âa prominent member of the social hygiene movement, â Exner was a YMCA conference speaker at Silver Bay in 1919 and 1921, and for many years a summer resident. The Springfield College roommate of William Naismith, the inventor of basketball, Exner took the sport to Shanghai in 1908 as National Physical Director for the YMCA. But even then he may have had an ulterior motive. Writing about the onset of puberty in The Rational Sex Life for Men (1913) , he noted, âIt is the time when the young man needs especially to keep a strong grip on himself and resort to vigorous physical exercise and other powerful interests in order to divert sexual energy and the attention into other channels. âExner noted that young men who engaged in self-abuse would lose their health, their athletic prowess, their academic standing, and coarsen their feelings."
