Die ihnen gewidmete Sit…zung der ersten internationalen Leprakonferenz, der auf besondere Einladung des Organisationscomités auch eine grössere Anzahl von Neurologen Berlins beiwohnte, hat mit unverkennbarer Deutlichkeit gezeigt, wie weit auch jetzt noch die Ansichten in dieser Frage auseinandergehen. Jeder, welcher der lebhaften Debatte jenes Tages beigewohnt hat, muss die Ueberzeugung mit nach Hause genommen haben, dass die dabei zu Tage getretenen Differenzen, welche eine auch nur theilweise Annäherung der sich bekämpfenden Parteien völlig ausschlossen, nur auf einer noch ungenügenden Kenntniss der thatsächlichen Verhältnisse beruhen können. Wo dieselbe zu suchen ist, ob bei den Leprologen, welchen eine specialistische Kenntniss mancher nervösen Krankheitserscheinungen abgeht, ob bei den Neurologen, welche begreiflicher Weise bei der hier relativ selten gebotenen Gelegenheit, Leprakranke zu untersuchen, wenig eigene Erfahrungen über diese Krankheit gesammelt haben, ob, was vielleicht am wahrscheinlichsten ist, bei beiden, das wird die Zukunft lehren. Auf jeden Fall lag in diesem wissenschaftlichen Streite eine Anregung zu weiteren Forschungen. Ich begrüsste daher mit Freuden die mir bald danach von der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Berlin aus den Mitteln der Gräfin Bose-Stiftung gewährte Gelegenheit, in Lepraländern die nervösen Krankheitserscheinungen der Lepra zu studiren. Es wurde mir damit ein Wunsch erfüllt, der sich mir schon seit längerer Zeit aufgedrängt hatte, ."
