Plank studiò all'univ. di Monaco; dedicò la tesi di dottorato (1880) e le sue prime pubblicazioni ai problemi della termodinamica, condottovi dalla lettura delle opere di R. Clausius. Dal 1930 al 1935 fu presidente del Kaiser-Wilhelm Institut, ritirandosi poi, per la sua netta opposizione al nazismo, in un rigoroso riserbo. Premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1918. Le ricerche condotte da P. negli ultimi anni del XIX° sec., dedicate al problema della radiazione termica (problema di confine tra termodinamica, meccanica e elettromagnetismo), furono quelle che lo avrebbero reso uno dei protagonisti dello sconvolgimento della concezione classica del mondo fisico che si verificò all'inizio del 20° secolo. La ricerca di una spiegazione meccanico-atomistica della seconda legge della termodinamica sembrava ostacolata da paradossi non facilmente appianabili e da estenuanti difficoltà matematiche. Plank espresse a più riprese le proprie perplessità sulla possibilità di ricondurre il comportamento irreversibile dei processi fisici osservabili nell'ambito della sola meccanica classica. Non lo convincevano nemmeno i recenti risultati ottenuti da L. Boltzmann circa il carattere essenzialmente probabilistico della seconda legge medesima: per Plank l'evoluzione irreversibile di un processo fisico era un dato assoluto e non solamente probabile. Con questa convinzione, si dedicò allo studio delle proprietà della radiazione termica pensando che, a differenza delle ipotesi atomistiche, fosse proprio il carattere ondulatorio e continuo della radiazione a poter dare una spiegazione della tendenza irreversibile all'equilibrio termodinamico. L'idea di affrontare il problema della radiazione termica fu appunto guidata dall'ipotesi che il processo di diffusione di una radiazione elettromagnetica da parte di un dipolo elettrico oscillante fosse un processo intrinsecamente irreversibile. Quando lo stesso Boltzmann gli fece notare che le equazioni di Maxwell non potevano descrivere processi irreversibili, Plank diede la prima svolta radicale alle sue ricerche e cominciò ad adottare i metodi della fisica statistica.
