"Die totale Entknochung des Brustkorbs nach Friedrich mit erheblicher Mortalität belastet war, schlug Wilms zur Vermeidung der Operationsgefährdung die begrenzte paravertebrale Rippenresektion vor. Sie ist später unter dem Begriff Pfeilerresektion bekannt geworden. In der Arbeit stellt Wilms fest, das Sauerbruch in ähnlicher Weise vorgegangen sei.
