[6], 1-252, [2] pages. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 15.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Burgundy cloth; front board decorated with gilt stamped lettering and there-line border along with fleur-de-lis, letter "x," and winged insect (either bees or butterflies) motif; obtrusively pervasive mottling/staining to surface cloth on rear board and spine with latter additionally having small chips exposing inner backstrip and loss of most lettering. Gilt top edge; deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Past owner's two-line ink inscription "Eleanor Whitney Allen | 1902" at top of front free endpaper; light vertical crease to several initial leaves; light foxing occurring to book's b/w plates and their adjacent pages; a few spots of scattered soiling; text leaves otherwise remain mostly clean. Front and rear hinges shaken; text block is firm. All b/w plates on unpaged leaves and illustrated by Maxfield Parrish; b/w frontispiece and b/w pictorial title with interlaying guard sheet; "List of Illustrations" on page [5] excludes the frontis and title and cites eighteen plates amongst text but only seventeen are present (lacking plate opposite page 92 but with no evidence as in a stub or remnant tearing that it was ever present). Unpaged publisher ad leaf at rear. Half-title verso has 1899 John Lane copyright statement at center along with "The University Press, U.S.A." specified at bottom center; pictorial title specifies 1900. A poor copy per the exterior cosmetics and sold as is but a rebinder could certainly preserve the front board and rematch the spine and rear board.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Hardcover with original DJ, 1929 Charles Scribner's Sons 339 pages. Very Good, in a VG DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear to black cloth boards with gilt spine title and full color pastedown to front cover - corners lightly bumped. Moderate shelf/edge wear, toning and chipping to clipped DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are intact with no writing. Deckled edges. NOTE: there are two flaws to the pages: 1) the previous owner did not know the proper way to separate pages and there are several with chips to the edges, and 2) there is foxing to many of the pages. This is reflected in the price. Ten classic stories of fantasy perfectly blended with 9 full color illustrations and color endpapers by Maxfield Parrish. A respectable depression-era copy in the original DJ. LOC SSS-12.
