Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. English summary: Of the forty-one essays that Maximus of Tyr wrote, those on the philosophy of religion are regarded as the most important. As a second-century Sophist, Maximus drew largely on the philosophy of Plato in arguing his vision of a universal god, attempting to educate a large public through various rhetorical and literary techniques, adapting to different listeners and circumstances. This book includes forty-three essays, and discusses the perceived superiority of the contemplative life to the active life; the superiority of the active life to the contemplative life; and the question of whether Plato was justified in banishing Homer from his Republic.
