Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, second impression, published later the same year. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, price obscured by old sticker, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 186…pp, illustrated. This book is a sequel to RING OF BRIGHT WATER. It, too, concerns the interactions of otters and humans. Gavin Maxwell (1914-69), was a Scottish naturalist, traveller and author, best known for his work with otters. He wrote the classic 'Ring of Bright Water' about how he brought an otter back from Iraq and raised it in Scotland. Ring of Bright Water sold more than a million copies and was made into a movie starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna in 1969. The title 'Ring of Bright Water' was taken from a poem by Kathleen Raine, who said in her autobiography that Maxwell had been the love of her life. Jacket by James Millar Watt (illustrator).

'Ring' (pub 1960, 211pp), 'Rocks' (pub 1963, 186pp), 'Raven' (pub 1968, 211pp). All have some edge wear, chipping, short closed tears…and creasing to tops and bottoms of jackets and spine, corners rubbed and bruised, some slight spotting to page fore edges, 'Ring' has previous owner's name to second ffep, 'Rocks' and 'Ring' have no inscriptions, all are price clipped, all are internally clean tight and squareish, overall a vg+ set. Fifty years ago Gavin Maxwell (1914-69), a Scottish naturalist, traveller and author, went to live in an abandoned house on a shingle beach on the west coast of Scotland. A haven for wildlife, he named his home Camusfearna and settled there with the otters Mij, Edal and Teko. 'Ring of Bright Water' chronicles Gavin Maxwell's first ten years with the otters and touched the hearts of readers the world over, brilliantly evoking life with these playful animals in this natural paradise. Two further volumes followed bringing the story full circle telling of the difficult last years and the final abandonment of the settlement. Gavin Maxwell is widely credited with saving the otter as a species in the UK and their subsequent conservation and protection. Scarce in these first impressions. Three heavy hardbacks, extra postage will be required. Illustrations by the author, Peter Scott, Michael Ayrton, Robin McEwen, James Millar Watt et al (illustrator).
