Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'Published July 1936' ). This book was previously owned by the renowned sociologist Daniel Bell. He signed his name on the blank verso of the illustrated first front end paper. He also penciled a good number of parentheses at the margins of the pages, did some pencil underlining, and wrote a word or two at the margin a few times. Prior to Dr. Bell, the book was owned by another individual who penned his name off the top edge of the front inside cover along with the date 1936 and the University Of Chicago. It's a reasonable guess that the crossing-out lines over this name, etc. was the work of Dr. Bell. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are in very nice condition. There is a speck of soiling on the front cover. I scratched a bit of it off, the remaining bit seems a little stubborn so I decided to let it be. The spine color is somewhat darkened. The gilt lettering on the spine is still very bright. There is a little crinkling and rubbing at the bottom edge of the spine, one teeny tiny tear at each spine end. The cover edges are in good shape, although the two bottom ones have specks of white coloring. The corners look very good, no rubbing. The bottom page edge has four speck-sized spots, none of which impact the actual pages. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are mostly very tight, there are no instances of a crack or space between any of the facing pages. The covers are nicely tight as well, no issues there. The inside covers and endpapers, front and rear, form the same map of Palestine. Off the outer edge of the rear end paper part of the map, someone wrote in 'Social Security No. ____________, 7-27-37.' I blackened out the numbers. Odd thing to do, different time, conscience and culture. The interior of the book is in very solid shape. The pages look very clean. Scrolling through, I'm not seeing any soiling. I'm also not finding any creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. Finally, there are no markings, no attachments, and I have already related the totality of the writing. There is a frontispiece 'Block Diagram of the Near East'. After the Preface and Table of Contents there is a 2 1/4 page List Of Illustrations which are identified as Figures. They all appear to be in excellent condition. William Creighton Graham was a professor of Old Testament language and literature at the University of Chicago from 1926 to 1938, before he moved to Winnipeg and served as Principal of United College from 1938 to 1954. Herbert Gordon May was Assistant Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at The Graduate School of Theology, Oberlin College. He was part of the Standard Bible Committee responsible for the 1945 Revised Standard Version of the Bible. In 1966 he became the chairman of that Committee.

Volume XXVI of the University of Chicago Oriental Institute Publications. Usual ex-library markings with worn edges and fraying corners. Upper 7 cm of brown cloth binding sunned. "In this publication, there is recorded a more or less specialized class of objects, excavated at Meggido from 1926 to1933. Its appearance has been made possible through the cooperation of the entire expedition staff . [Robert S. Lamon] has carefully checked the stratification of the various objects against the field records. My statements agree with his attributions, except in chapter ii, where certain problems are dealt with at length, and in a few special situations where I have indicated a larger but not contradictory range of possible dates. Since this manuscript was prepared, [he] has carried further his studies of the stratigraphy of the mound, . so that more exact data on some points mentioned here incidentally will doubtless be forthcoming. . The excellent illustrations are the product of Mr. Olaf E. Lind's skillful photography, with the result that the finer details of the subjects are clearly reproduced - a most important factor, since we are dealing with objects representing the art of ancient Meggido." - Preface. Oversized volume may require additional shipping.
