Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 291 pages : illustrations ; 34 cm. Introduction : Once upon a time this book was going to be the Great British Catalogue, a cousin of Stuart Brand's excellent American shopping list of resources, the Whole Earth Catalog. But it is information, rather than products, that we have indexed, borrowing and stealing elements from encyclopedias and the 'underground' press, the prototype popularisers of amazing facts, the Illustrated London News, the Children's Wonder Book of Marvels, H.G. Wells' universal histories of just about everything, to name but a few. Over the last 18 months we have argued the book into existence, exhausting, exhilarating and transforming ourselves in the process. From entropy to Zen, metabolism to PSI, we chased metaphors and cross-references, fought over definitions, and had our preconceptions exploded. Our enormous ambitions were cut down to size by our capabilities, our sources of information, and our bank balance. When we began, we confidently wrote that our aim was "to reassemble and cross-reference information, compare and contrast alternative theories, generate involvement and to catalogue resources." Now that it is finished, we are still arguing about the result, and the book will have to be its own definition. The contents and theme, the myths and speculation, and the patterns they make, are the result of our individual bias and curiosity - an index of just some of the possibilities.
